Chapter 5: When Grace Meets Strength It was a sunny afternoon in Florence — one of those rare days when time seemed to slow just enough to savor it. Shanaya walked hand in hand with Matteo through the busy mall, his tiny fingers curled around hers. “Zia, can I get a gelato?” he asked, eyes gleaming at the colorful display. “Only if you promise not to ruin your lunch again,” she said with a soft smile. Matteo gave a solemn nod. “I promise.” As they turned toward the food court, a few stores down, another family was enjoying a rare outing. Lorenzo walked next to his mother, dressed elegantly in a pearl-blue blouse and sunglasses. They hadn’t been shopping together in years — and she had insisted. “I want to see the spring collection in person,” she had said. “And you, young man, need new shirts that aren’t so serious.” Lorenzo chuckled. “Business meetings don’t care about fashion trends, Mamma.” “Maybe, but your future wife might.” He rolled his eyes with a smile. “You’ve been talking to Papa again, haven’t you?” Just then, his phone buzzed. “Excuse me,” he said, stepping away to take the call. His mother continued browsing a boutique window. But after a few steps, she slowed… then stopped. Her vision blurred. Her chest tightened. She gripped the nearby rail — but her knees buckled before she could call for help. “Signora!” Shanaya rushed forward, just in time to catch her before she hit the ground. “Mamma!” Matteo cried out, running to her side. “She fainted,” Shanaya said calmly, already checking her pulse. “Call an ambulance.” People gathered, but no one else stepped in. Shanaya gently rested the older woman’s head in her lap, shielding her from the crowd. Matteo clutched her side nervously. Within minutes, paramedics arrived, and Shanaya rode with her to the hospital while calling the emergency contact from her phone — a number she found in the woman’s purse. Lorenzo burst through the hospital entrance. His eyes locked on Shanaya — standing near the nurses’ desk, holding Matteo’s hand, calm despite everything. “Where is she?” he asked. “She’s with the doctor. She regained consciousness in the ambulance. I think she was dehydrated,” Shanaya explained softly. He looked at her — really looked. Long dark hair tied in a simple braid. A modest dress. No makeup, no drama. And yet… there was something magnetic about her calm presence. “Thank you,” he said, genuinely. “I’m Lorenzo Moretti. That was my mother.” “Shanaya Kapoor,” she replied. “It was nothing. Anyone would’ve helped.” He knelt to Matteo. “Were you scared, little man?” Matteo shook his head. “Nope. Zia was with me. She’s the best.” Lorenzo smiled at that. “It seems she is.” Later, once the doctor cleared his mother and discharged her with instructions, Lorenzo returned to Shanaya in the hallway. “My mother wants to thank you herself.” Shanaya walked with him into the room. “Cara mia,” his mother said, smiling weakly from the bed, “you were an angel today. Thank you.” “It was an honor, Signora.” Lorenzo drove her home, but his thoughts didn’t stay with his mother. They remained with the girl who hadn’t asked for anything, who didn’t boast or linger for attention. He couldn’t stop thinking about her. That night, he stood by the window of his study, staring out into the city lights. “Find out everything you can about her,” he told his assistant over the phone. “Her background, where she lives, what she does. Quietly.” The next morning, Christian sipped his espresso in the garden, scrolling through the news on his tablet when Lorenzo walked in. “She’s doing fine,” Lorenzo said. Christian looked up. “Mama?” “Yeah. Fainted at the mall. A girl helped her. Brought her to the hospital.” Christian set down the cup. “Did you get her name?” “No,” Lorenzo replied casually. “But I won’t forget her face.” Christian smiled. “Then let’s hope she’s not another distraction.” Lorenzo didn’t answer. But neither of them realized — they were already orbiting the same sun.
