Aethelwulf POV
"The office is open now." Cole announced, his voice cutting into the silence and pulling us back to reality. I cleared my throat lightly and gestured for them to walk in first before following behind them. The door opened to the familiar office space, the scent of polished wood and old paper settling in the air. I walked straight to the head swivel chair across the desk and sat down, adjusting slightly as the leather shifted under my weight.
My eyes settled immediately on disaster himself sitting right in front of me, his posture relaxed like he had all the time in the world. I exhaled slowly, pushing every unnecessary thought aside. I need to shift my mind off for now and focus on the meeting. Their reason for being here, nothing more.
"You both are welcome to the Moonlight Pack, it's a pleasure to have you both here," I started, my tone calm and controlled, leaving no room for familiarity. I wasn’t here to entertain conversations or revisit anything from the past, I just wanted this meeting done as quickly as possible.
"You've changed a lot since the last time I saw you, you don't know how happy I am to see you again man, so what really happened?" Alpha Gerald asked, leaning slightly forward with curiosity written all over his face. I cleared my throat again, my fingers pressing lightly against the armrest. If an Alpha can't read the room then how the f**k does he even rule his people in the first place? It was obvious I wasn't here for that kind of conversation.
"Well, whatever happened is in the past now, we should focus on our reason for coming here today," I said, keeping my voice steady and my expression neutral. He nodded slightly but I could tell from the look in his eyes that he wasn’t done asking questions.
"So I heard you left for the human world, how was life amongst those weak creatures, and did you ever encounter wolf hunters? You know I hear lots of stories about how they detect wolves and all of that..." he continued, his curiosity stretching further than necessary. My jaw tightened slightly as I was about to respond but Alpha Killian tapped on the desk slowly, the sound deliberate enough to interrupt without raising his voice.
"If you want some catching up with him, then you should probably visit him in his home, this is called an office for a reason," he said, his voice deep and firm, the kind that didn’t ask but ordered. The atmosphere shifted slightly, Gerald leaning back as if reminded of why we were actually here.
"We are here precisely for the virus pandemic, initially we thought it wouldn't reach our Packs, we just heard how fast it is spreading, then we confirmed that the healers of your Pack found the herb that would cure it, so we are here to discuss how best to get the herb from your Pack and plant," Gerald said, adjusting his posture as he spoke, his tone now more serious.
I took a slow breath, letting it out through my nose before responding. "Well, the herb is found in one of the thickest forests we have and it is well known that it isn't a popular shrub," I said, my fingers resting against the desk as I spoke. The forest itself wasn’t an easy place to navigate, dense, quiet, and not somewhere outsiders could easily access without guidance. "I think we better have this conversation again with our healer in five days' time, she is very busy right now."
Killian looked at me with that face, the one that questioned without saying anything, like he was trying to figure out if I was holding something back or just stating facts.
"When she's done explaining it to you then we will know if we're distributing the shoot or root or probably the leaves or even still the already processed herb juice, I can't predict an amount I can't defend," I added, leaning back slightly in my chair. Gerald nodded in understanding, accepting the explanation without pushing further.
"Such a waste of time," Killian muttered as he stood to his feet, his chair moving back with a faint scrape against the floor.
"Can we at least have the processed one? A bottle won't be bad, we need to sustain ourselves for at least five days," Gerald added quickly, glancing between us. I narrowed my eyes slightly as I thought about it, weighing the request. It wouldn’t be bad to give them something, they couldn’t just leave empty-handed.
"I will be right back," I said as I stood up and stepped out of the office. The hallway was quieter, the tension from inside not following me out. I gestured to Cole who was leaning against the wall, his attention shifting to me immediately.
"Get twenty bottles of the herb, ten in each bag, bring it to the office," I instructed. He nodded without hesitation and walked off to get it.
I returned to the office a moment later, pushing the door open. "Cole went to get it," I announced as I stepped back inside, taking my seat again.
"I suspect the scandal between your Pack and the Blood River Pack is still on," Gerald started again, his voice casual but his eyes observant. He should know that being silent for a few minutes won’t kill anyone.
"That question is meant for Preston, not me," I replied, keeping my tone flat and uninterested. He nodded with a small smile like he expected that answer.
"He should probably brief you on what's going on in the Pack at least, he never can tell or is it that you won't be staying for long?" he asked, pushing just a little more. Before I could respond, the door clicked open and Cole walked in with two bags in his hands, the faint sound of glass bottles shifting inside them.
I gestured for him to hand each bag to the Alphas and he did.
"I really appreciate this, thank you," Gerald said as he took his bag, his tone genuine.
"Thanks," Killian muttered as he took his, his expression unchanged.
"See you both next week," I announced, making it clear the meeting was over. Killian stepped forward and stretched out his hand for a handshake and honestly I didn’t want that handshake, something about it didn’t sit right with me, it felt like more than just a normal gesture. I swallowed hard before taking his hand anyway, his grip firm and intentional like he was trying to remind me of something.
"I still got the scar, you know the deal." his voice slipped into my head through the mind link and I stiffened slightly, pulling my hand away almost immediately as irritation settled in my chest. He smirked like he knew exactly what he had done before turning and walking out, Gerald following behind him without another word.
