Aethelwulf POV
I looked at her with deep confusion written all over my face, my brows slowly drawing together as I tried to make sense of what I was seeing. What the hell is she doing here? This is the second time I am seeing her in Kiera’s room, and it doesn’t sit right with me at all. I thought they were supposed to be enemies, not this… whatever this is, not this sudden act of concern and calmness like nothing ever happened between them. Not that I don’t want them to be on good terms, that would make things easier for everyone, but then what happened to doing that when she was conscious, when there was actually a chance for it to mean something?
“I came to check up on her,” she said, her voice smooth and controlled, almost too controlled, and I turned back to Kiera slowly, my attention shifting away from Tasha as I stared at Kiera’s pale skin, my eyes scanning her face carefully, trying to understand what exactly was going on.
This isn’t what I expected to see in any way. Not even close.
Her skin looked worse than before, drained of colour, her lips slightly dry, her breathing shallow in a way that made my chest tighten just watching her. There was something off, something that didn’t align with the treatment she had been receiving, and it was beginning to irritate me.
“How was your night, Tasha?” I asked, my tone neutral, though my mind was far from calm, and she nodded in affirmation, her expression softening slightly.
“It was splendid. I get that you were surprised to see me checking up on the same person that didn’t blink at the opportunity to end my life,” she started, a small smile forming on her face, like she was proud of her own words.
I remained silent, watching her closely.
“That’s how kind I am, I just can’t help it. Even when I try to treat people exactly the way they treat me, it just doesn’t let me, I am not wired that way. I care a lot for people…” she continued, her voice carrying that same calm tone, but something about it felt forced, like she was trying too hard to paint a picture.
I raised my hand slowly, cutting her off mid sentence, my patience thinning.
“I need to figure out why her health keeps deteriorating instead,” I said, my eyes fixed back on Kiera, my voice firm, leaving no room for unnecessary talk.
“Deteriorating?” she repeated, sounding surprised, and I could feel her gaze on me.
“I even thought there was a whole lot of improvement today. When I came inside and called her name, she answered me, she even opened her eyes slightly and closed them back, you know,” she added, and I looked up at her immediately, confusion settling deeper into my expression.
Does she even hear herself right now?
“Yeah, so I think you’re just overreacting, probably expecting too much. You should give her two days at least, if there’s no improvement then you can seek for other measures,” she said, her tone light, almost dismissive.
I nodded slowly, my face giving away nothing, even though my thoughts were far from agreeing with her.
“You’re right,” I said calmly.
She smiled broadly at me, clearly satisfied with my response, then turned and walked out of the room, her steps steady, confident, like she had just done something meaningful.
The moment she left, the air in the room felt different, quieter, more tense.
Just then Martha walked in, her presence rushed, her breathing slightly uneven like she had hurried.
“Thank goodness you are here. Look at her condition, it’s deteriorating with each passing minute,” I said immediately, stepping slightly away from the bed to give her space, my voice carrying the urgency I had been holding back.
She walked straight to the bed without wasting time and placed her hand on Kiera’s neck, then her chest, her fingers pressing gently as she tried to feel her condition, her expression shifting slowly into confusion.
“This is strange,” she let out, her brows knitting together.
I folded my hands across my chest, watching her closely, waiting for something more concrete.
“I will give her a quick bath, then give her another herb instead. Let’s see the improvement tonight. If it’s still the same, then we will know what to do,” she said, her tone thoughtful, though I could tell she wasn’t entirely sure.
I nodded once, then turned and walked out of the room, my mind already shifting to something else.
I can only wonder what the two Alphas are here for.
With a deep frown on my face, I walked out of the main door, the cool air outside hitting my skin slightly, but it did nothing to ease the tension building inside me. The driver was already waiting for me, standing by the car like he had been expecting me for a while.
I sighted Cole walking into the gate from a distance, his pace quickening the moment he noticed me. He ran toward the car and joined me at the back passenger side just as I settled in.
“Good morning, Alpha Aethelwulf,” he greeted, closing the door behind him as the driver drove off immediately.
“You were with Preston last night?” I asked, my voice calm but direct.
He swallowed hard, his throat moving visibly before he nodded. He should have tried to lie.
They don’t know that I am not like their Alpha, I can detect lies without effort, it’s written all over them, in their voice, their breath, their hesitation.
I didn’t say another word to him after that. Silence filled the car, thick and uncomfortable, but I didn’t care to ease it.
When we arrived at the Alpha’s office, I opened the car door and stepped out without waiting. Cole said something behind me, but I ignored it completely.
I walked toward the entrance, and the guards opened the door immediately. The receptionist greeted politely, her voice soft, and I nodded once without stopping.
I headed straight for the staircase and climbed up to the first floor, my steps steady, controlled.
“Ahh, long time. I was so surprised when your twin brother said you’re in his pack,” one of them said the moment I stepped in,I looked at him briefly.
To be honest, I don’t know his name.I stretched out my hand for a handshake anyway.
“I’m Alpha Aethelwulf,” I introduced simply,he understood immediately.
“Ahh, it’s been a long time after all. I’m Alpha Gerald of Goral Pack, we used to be classmates back in high school,” he said, smiling lightly. It didn’t ring a bell, not even slightly.
“Yeah, good old days,” I replied awkwardly, withdrawing my hand and turning to the other one.
He stood up slowly, a deep frown on his face, his expression serious, almost cold. He stretched out his hand for a handshake, and the moment my hand met his, I felt it.
Goosebumps spread all over my body instantly.A sharp, unnatural chill ran through my veins, like something was wrong at the core. His eyes flickered red.
“Alpha Killian.”For a moment, time stopped.
Everything went completely silent, like the world itself had paused.I stared at him, my mind racing, disbelief hitting me like a wave.I can’t believe this.
I thought he died.I ripped off his soul myself,so what is he still doing here?
