I Trust You

Aethelwulf POV An email popped up and I opened it immediately. “From the JK Group, the operation has begun, we need your presence.” This was exactly what I feared, being absent when the operation begins. I took a deep breath, trying to steady my thoughts, then went to my call log and dialed my PA’s number. It went through almost immediately. “Coordinate the operation, nothing should go wrong. They shouldn’t even notice my absence, is that clear?” I asked over the line, my voice firm and controlled, the kind that leaves no room for mistake or argument. “Yes sir,” he replied, and I ended the call immediately. I turned my head slowly toward the bed where Kiera was still lying. She looked peaceful in a strange way, like none of the chaos outside could reach her. Her chest rose and fell slowly, her face pale but calm, and for a moment I just stood there watching her without moving. Then I forced myself to look away and walked out of the room. I needed to monitor everything closely. If anything went wrong in this operation, it would not be something I could fix later. I went into my room, turned on my system, and connected directly to the operation ground. The screens lit up immediately, showing different angles, movements, and teams already in position. I leaned forward slightly, my focus sharpening as I began to give instructions through my PA, correcting small details, adjusting timing, and making sure every movement stayed aligned with the plan. At intervals, I called him again, my voice steady but strict, making sure nothing slipped through. “Adjust the left team. They are moving too early.” “Keep the central unit in position until further instruction.” “Make sure no external signal interferes.” Every instruction was followed immediately. The operation moved smoothly, but I stayed alert the entire time. There was no room for distraction. I didn’t even realize how much time had passed until everything finally came to an end. The final phase was completed successfully, and the system began shutting down automatically. Only then did I lean back slightly, exhaling slowly for the first time in hours. Almost immediately after, my secretary arranged a meeting between me and the CEO of JK Group of Companies. I didn’t argue. I simply agreed and went through it. The meeting lasted about an hour, filled with reports, confirmations, and final approvals. They were satisfied with the outcome, and their tone made it clear they were impressed with how smoothly everything had gone. “Well done, guys. You both have three days off for a wonderful deal we just closed. Enjoy your break, see you both after it,” I said calmly. Their expressions changed instantly. Relief. Happiness. Exhaustion finally lifting off their shoulders. They had worked hard for this project, longer than most people understood, and I knew that even a short break meant a lot. I turned off my system and glanced at the time again. My eyes widened slightly. “2:00am?” I muttered under my breath. It didn’t even feel real. Time had slipped away without me noticing. I stood up immediately and walked out of the room, moving down the staircase toward Kiera’s room. The house was quiet at this hour, the kind of silence that feels heavier than noise. Only the soft sound of my footsteps filled the hallway. When I pushed the door open, I saw Tasha sitting on the sofa. The moment she saw me, she jerked up quickly like someone caught in the middle of something she shouldn’t be doing. “Good morning, Alpha Aethelwulf,” she greeted immediately, adjusting her posture and forcing a calm expression. “How are you feeling?” I asked. “I’m all good,” she replied, but her eyes flickered toward Kiera for a second before coming back to me. “It’s just a pity that the one person who gave me proper treatment is now lying like this.” I narrowed my eyes slightly at her response. There was something about her tone that didn’t sit right with me, but I didn’t dwell on it. “You should put on your protective clothing the next time you enter this room, to avoid ending up in the same condition as her,” I replied. She nodded quickly. “Yes, Alpha.” Then she stood up, hesitating for a brief second like she wanted to say more but decided against it. “I came to check on her. I will take my leave now,” she said before opening the door and walking out quietly. The room fell into silence again. I moved closer to the bed and placed my hand gently on Kiera’s neck. The moment I touched her skin, I immediately felt it. Her temperature was still burning hotter than normal. Without wasting time, I rushed into the bathroom, grabbed a small towel and a bowl, filled it with water, and soaked the towel completely. I returned and began wiping her body carefully, starting from her arms, then her neck, then her forehead. Her skin felt too hot, too unstable, like her body was fighting something it couldn’t fully control. I kept wiping slowly, watching her reaction closely, hoping for some change. After a few minutes, I took out a thermometer and checked her temperature again. It was still high. Not dangerously worse than before, but far from normal. I exhaled slowly through my nose, then stood up and went to the herb basket. I picked one of the leaves I had seen Kiera use before, crushed it firmly into the bowl of water, and stirred it until the liquid changed slightly in color. Then I soaked the towel again, squeezed it lightly, and continued wiping her body. Her breathing remained steady, but her skin was pale now, almost drained of color. That worried me more than I wanted to admit. She should have shown signs of recovery by now. Even a small improvement would have been enough, but there was nothing. Still, I didn’t stop. After a while, her temperature finally began to drop. Slowly at first, then more noticeably. I checked again with the thermometer and this time it was closer to normal. Not perfect, but stable enough. The herbal mixture was working. A small breath escaped me as I placed the towel back in the bowl. I didn’t realize I had been holding tension in my shoulders until that moment. I stepped back slightly, watching her for a few seconds. “She should have woken up by now,” I muttered to myself. “This is not normal recovery speed.” I stood there longer than I intended, studying her face. There was something about her condition that didn’t sit right with me. It wasn’t just the virus. It felt deeper than that, but I couldn’t place it properly yet. I gently lifted her hand and held it for a moment before placing a soft kiss on it without thinking too much about it. The moment I did, something strange happened. My vision blurred slightly. Just for a second, but enough to make me pause. Her scent felt stronger than before, more intense, almost overwhelming, like it was pulling at something inside me I couldn’t explain. I blinked a few times, trying to steady myself. “Hey man,” I tried to mindlink my wolf, but there was no response. Nothing. No connection at all. That silence irritated me more than I expected. I needed clarity, especially now, but I wasn’t getting it. I shoved the thought aside immediately. I couldn’t afford distractions right now. I left the room and went back to mine. The house was still quiet, the kind of silence that feels too long at night. I checked the time again. It was already around 3:00am. I needed rest, even if only for a short while. I collapsed onto the bed without thinking much and within minutes, I drifted off. A knock on the door pulled me back to reality. “What the f**k?” I muttered, irritated, still half asleep. “Who is it?” The knocking continued, steady and persistent. I already had a feeling who it was even before he spoke. “I need to see you,” Preston’s voice came through. I sighed heavily, forcing myself out of bed. My body felt tired, my mind still not fully reset. I walked to the door and opened it. “Bro, can whatever you want to say wait till morning?” I asked, my voice rough from sleep. He shook his head immediately. That made me frown. Something about him felt off. His scent, his posture, even his expression looked restless, like something had been bothering him for a while. “I will be leaving for the Alpha meeting this morning,” he said. “In my absence, take care of the pack.” I blinked once, then stared at him properly. “You can order your Beta or Gamma to do that,” I replied sharply. “You didn’t f*****g employ me to assist you.” He didn’t move. He just stood there like he expected a different answer. “Bro, as long as you’re here, I trust you more with this pack,” he said again. That sentence hung in the air longer than it should have.
