Chapter Ten: The First Mark
The forest changed the moment Eamon stepped into view.
Not visibly, not in any way a human eye would immediately notice.
But Ariya felt it.
The trees seemed tighter somehow, the air heavier against her lungs. The river beside them no longer sounded calming, it sounded restless, violent, as though the water itself sensed the tension coiling through the territory.
Eamon Voss emerged from the shadows with three wolves behind him.
Unlike the last visit, there was nothing casual about this.
This was a statement.
The wolves flanking him were massive, their expressions cold and unreadable. One woman with silver braids watched Kael with open hostility, while the broad shouldered wolf beside her stared directly at Ariya in a way that made her skin crawl.
Assessment! Value! Threat!
Kael stepped forward slowly, placing himself half a pace ahead of Ariya.
The movement was subtle.
Instinctive and deeply territorial.
You’re becoming predictable,Eamon said lightly.
Kael’s voice dropped into something dangerous. You brought wolves onto my land.
And yet,Eamon replied smoothly, you haven’t attacked me.
The bond tightened sharply between Ariya and Kael. She felt the surge of restraint inside him like a physical thing, violent instinct chained tightly beneath skin.
Dax moved closer on Kael’s right.
You need to leave, he warned.
Eamon looked amused. You keep saying that.
The silver haired she-wolf beside him tilted her head slightly.
She’s stronger than I expected, she murmured.
Ariya stiffened.
Eamon’s eyes flicked toward her. You can feel it too?
Kael’s growl cut through the air instantly.
That’s enough.
The river surged violently beside them.
Everyone froze.
Ariya inhaled sharply.
She hadn’t touched the water.
Hadn’t moved.
But emotion ripped through her chest too hard to contain, and the world around her reacted.
Again.
Eamon’s expression shifted for the first time since arriving.
Interest sharpened into certainty.
Well, he said softly. That confirms it.
Kael’s entire body tensed.
You will not involve her in this.
Eamon’s smile faded slightly.
You misunderstand me, Blackthorn. His amber eyes slid toward Ariya again. She’s already involved.
The words settled like poison.
Ariya stepped around Kael before she could second guess herself.
Ariya! he warned.
No.
Her voice came out steadier than she felt.
She looked directly at Eamon.
What exactly do you want from me?
The rival Alpha studied her carefully, almost thoughtfully.
Truthfully?
Yes.
You’re rare, he said simply. Power like yours changes things.
That’s not an answer.
No, he agreed calmly. It’s the beginning of one.
Kael moved beside her immediately, close enough that heat radiated from him in waves.
You don’t speak to her alone.
Eamon’s mouth curved faintly. That sounds less like leadership and more like jealousy.
The bond reacted violently.
A rush of heat slammed through Ariya so suddenly her breath caught.
Kael felt it too.
His eyes flared gold.
The wolves around them shifted uneasily.
Dax muttered a curse under his breath.
Eamon noticed everything.
Interesting,he murmured.
Kael’s control slipped another inch.
You’re testing boundaries.
I am observing, Eamon corrected.
The silver haired wolf beside him spoke quietly. The bond’s unstable.
Ariya looked between them. Would someone stop talking about me like I’m not standing here?
That earned the faintest hint of approval from the female wolf.
But Eamon only smiled.
You feel it, don’t you? He asked Ariya softly. How reactive he’s becoming.
Kael’s jaw tightened hard enough to ache.
Ariya hated that Eamon wasn’t wrong.
She could feel Kael’s emotions too clearly now, possessiveness curling hot beneath his restraint, protective instinct bordering on violence.
And worse, part of her responded to it.
The realization unsettled her deeply.
I’m not afraid of him,she said firmly.
Eamon’s gaze sharpened. That may be the problem.
Kael stepped forward instantly.
That’s enough!
Power rolled off him in a tangible wave this time.
The wolves behind Eamon stiffened immediately.
Even Ariya felt it, Alpha dominance pressing against the air itself.
Eamon’s expression cooled slightly.
There he is.
The bond pulsed painfully.
Kael was close to losing control.
Ariya could feel it.
The terrifying part?
So could everyone else.
Dax moved subtly closer. Ready.
Not against Eamon.
Against Kael if necessary.
The realization hit Ariya like ice water.
They were afraid of their own Alpha.
Kael noticed her expression instantly.
Pain flickered through the bond.
Then anger at himself.
Eamon saw that too.
You should tell her, he said quietly.
Kael’s voice dropped to a growl. Leave!!
You haven’t told her what happens when the curse fully takes hold.
Silence.
Ariya’s stomach tightened.
Kael? She called out.
He didn’t look at her.
Eamon continued.
The closer the Blood Moon gets, the harder it becomes for him to separate instinct from reason.
Kael’s breathing roughened.
Stop talking!
Or what? Eamon asked softly. You’ll prove my point?
The world seemed to still.
Ariya felt the exact moment Kael’s control fractured.
The bond exploded.
Heat tore through her chest violently enough to make her gasp. Emotion flooded her senses, rage, fear, possessiveness, hunger.
Not hers but his.
Kael turned toward Eamon fully now, eyes glowing unnaturally bright.
Get off my land!
The command shook through the trees.
The wolves behind Eamon instinctively stepped back.
But Eamon held his ground.
And smiled.
There it is, he said softly.
Then everything happened at once.
The silver-haired she wolf lunged.
Not at Kael.
At Ariya.
A blur of movement exploded through the clearing.
Kael moved faster.
One second he stood beside her.
The next he was between them with a snarl so violent it barely sounded human.
The impact shook the ground.
The she wolf flew backward hard enough to crash into a tree trunk.
Ariya stumbled as power ripped through the bond like wildfire.
Kael had lost control.
Not fully.
But enough.
His claws had emerged partially, sharp black talons extending from trembling fingers. His breathing sounded ragged now, more animal than man.
The wolves froze.
Dax cursed quietly.
Eamon’s eyes narrowed, not amused anymore.
Concerned.
Because Kael looked dangerous.
Ariya stared at him.
The bond roared painfully between them, wild and unstable.
Kael turned toward her slowly.
And for one horrifying second, he looked at her like prey.
Fear pierced straight through the bond.
Not her fear.
His.
He saw it too.
Saw what he’d almost become.
Kael staggered backward immediately like he’d been burned.
Ariya!
His voice sounded wrecked.
The silver haired wolf rose slowly, rubbing blood from her mouth.
She triggered him fast, she muttered.
Eamon’s expression hardened.
This is progressing too quickly.
Kael snarled.
“You don’t get to talk about her.The growl barely sounded human now.
Ariya’s heart pounded violently.
Because despite the fear, the bond still pulled toward him.
Still wanted him.
Still recognized him.
Kael looked shattered by that realization.
Ariya, he said again, quieter now. Stay back.
She should have listened.
Instead, she stepped toward him.
Every wolf in the clearing stiffened instantly.
Ariya, Dax warned softly.
But she couldn’t stop.
The bond pulled her forward with aching certainty.
Kael looked horrified.
Don’t!!
You’re fighting yourself, she whispered.
His breathing roughened.
You need to move away from me.
No.
The single word hit him harder than shouting would have.
Ariya stopped directly in front of him now.
Close enough to feel the heat radiating from his skin.
Close enough to see the fear in his eyes.
Not fear of Eamon.
Fear of himself.
The bond trembled between them.
Raw.
Bleeding emotion.
You won’t hurt me, she said softly.
Kael looked almost anguished.
You don’t know that.
I know you’re trying harder than anyone I’ve ever seen.
Something inside him cracked.
The claws trembling at his sides flexed painfully.
Ariya slowly lifted her hand.
Dax inhaled sharply.
Eamon went still.
Even the forest seemed to hold its breath.
Ariya touched Kael’s face gently.
The world exploded.
Power surged through the bond in a violent wave of heat and instinct.
Kael made a broken sound low in his throat as his hands slammed onto her waist automatically, pulling her flush against him.
Ariya gasped.
The connection ripped deeper.
And suddenly, Pain! Sharp and burning at the base of her throat.
She cried out softly.
Kael froze instantly.
The heat vanished.
Everyone stared.
Ariya lifted trembling fingers to her neck.
Warmth met her touch.
Blood.
Kael staggered backward like he’d been struck.
Horror flooded the bond.
No, he whispered.
A faint silver mark had appeared beneath Ariya’s collarbone.
Not fully formed, but there.
The clearing went deathly silent.
Dax looked stunned.
The silver haired wolf swore under her breath.
And Eamon Voss stared at the mark with unmistakable realization.
The first mark, he said quietly.
Kael looked sick.
Because neither of them had meant for it to happen.
But the bond had just crossed a line they could never uncross again.
