Blood Remembers
Morning in Black Hollow never felt entirely peaceful.
Mist drifted through the forest like pale smoke, sliding between the tall pines and curling around the cabins scattered throughout pack territory. The air was cool and damp, carrying the scent of wet earth and woodsmoke.
Ariya stood at the edge of the clearing outside Kael’s house, arms wrapped loosely around herself.
The pack had mostly dispersed after their tense gathering. A few wolves moved through the trees, watchful but quieter now. Patrols were being organized and borders were being reinforced.
War preparations.
And somehow, she had become the reason.
The realization should have terrified her, instead something deeper stirred beneath her ribs, something old and steady.
The bond pulsed softly.
Kael was close.
She didn’t need to turn to know when he approached because his presence rolled through the air before him, calm but powerful, like a storm that had learned patience.
You’re awake early, he said.
Ariya glanced over her shoulder.
He’d changed since the clearing confrontation. His expression was calmer, but his eyes were sharper, Alpha again and calculating.
But the moment their gazes met, that control softened just slightly.
“You say that like wolves sleep in,” she replied.
A faint smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.
We don’t, but most people do.
She studied him for a moment.
You’re worried about many things.
“Like Voss.”
Kael didn’t deny it.
He stepped beside her, both of them facing the forest.
The howl last night wasn’t random,he said, it was a message.
What kind? She asked.
That he’s close enough to challenge.
The words settled heavily between them.
Ariya exhaled slowly.
Then why isn’t everyone panicking?,she asked quietly.
Because wolves don’t panic,Kael said. “We prepare.
Silence stretched, then something strange happened, the forest shifted.
At first it was subtle, a faint rustling in the trees, like wind moving through leaves.
But the air was completely still.
Ariya frowned.
Do you feel that?
Kael stiffened.
“Yes.”
The bond surged suddenly, stronger than before. Heat spread through Ariya’s chest, racing down her arms and into her fingertips.
Her skin prickled and the forest responded.
Leaves trembled along nearby branches.
The wind rose in a sudden spiral around them, tugging at her hair.
Kael’s eyes widened.
Ariya, he called out quietly.
She didn’t hear him fully.
Something inside her had opened, not violently, not painfully.
But like a door unlocking after centuries, images flickered through her mind.
A moonlit clearing.
Women standing in a circle, silver light pooling around their feet.
Wolves bowing their heads.
Blood dripping into stone.
Her breath caught and the wind surged harder.
“Ariya!” Kael grabbed her shoulders.
The contact snapped the vision apart and the wind died instantly.
The forest fell still again.
Ariya blinked rapidly, disoriented.
“What? what was that?”
Kael stared at her like she had just done something impossible.
“That,” he said slowly, “was the forest answering you.”
Her pulse hammered.
“I didn’t do anything.”
You did, she said
“I just felt something.”
Kael’s jaw tightened.
“Blood memory.”
Ariya swallowed.
That sounds dramatic.
“It’s dangerous,” he corrected.
Before she could respond, footsteps approached from behind them.
Lyra emerged from the trees, looking unusually serious.
“You two might want to see this.”
The pack gathered again, but this time the mood was different.
Tighter and more alert.
Ariya noticed the shift immediately. Wolves stood closer together and Voices were lower.
Something had happened.
Dax stood near the center of the clearing holding something in his hand.
When Ariya saw it, her stomach dropped.
A strip of cloth,dark red.
Kael stepped forward slowly.
Where did you find it? He asked.
North border,Dax said grimly.
Kael took the cloth.
The moment Ariya saw the symbol burned into the fabric, a strange chill slid down her spine.
A crescent moon, split by claw marks.
Lyra cursed under her breath.
What is it? Ariya asked.
Kael didn’t answer right away.
His gaze was fixed on the symbol.
Voss, he said finally.
Okay, Ariya said slowly. “So the rival pack leaves threatening laundry around the forest?”
Dax snorted despite himself.
It’s a claim marker, Lyra explained. “A warning.”
Ariya frowned.
“Warning about what?”
Kael turned to face her.
About you.
The clearing went silent, her stomach tightened.
“That seems excessive.”
Dax crossed his arms.
You don’t understand pack law, then he explained it.”
Kael’s voice was calm but heavy.
“If a rival Alpha believes something valuable exists in another territory, he can challenge it.”
And I’m the valuable thing?
Lyra nodded.
“Your bloodline,” she said. If Voss confirms it.
Ariya rubbed her temples.
This keeps getting worse.
“Not worse,” Kael said quietly.
“More complicated.”
Dax suddenly stepped closer.
Alpha,he said, voice careful. “There’s something else.”
Kael looked up.
What?
Dax hesitated.
“The scouts didn’t just find the marker.”
What else did they find? Kael asked.
Dax’s gray eyes flicked briefly toward Ariya.
“Tracks.”
Kael’s expression hardened.
How many? One.
The entire pack went still and Lyra’s voice dropped.
“That’s not possible.”
Ariya looked between them.
Someone wants to explain why one wolf is a problem?
Kael’s voice was quiet now.
Because Voss never travels alone.
Ariya’s stomach sank.
“So if it was just one”
Lyra finished the thought.
“It means he wasn’t scouting.”
Kael looked toward the northern forest line.
He was watching.
The words hung in the air like thunder before a storm.
Ariya felt the bond tighten sharply, not fear but something darker.
Possession.
Kael felt it too.
His gaze snapped to her.
The bond pulsed violently between them.
Across the clearing, several wolves stiffened.
Dax inhaled slowly.
“Alpha”
I know,Kael said.
But Ariya didn’t know.
“What?”
Lyra looked uneasy for the first time.
The bond,she said quietly.
It’s expanding,Ariya blinked.
That doesn’t sound like a bad thing.
“It means something,” Kael said.
What?
He hesitated, then answered.
It means the rival Alpha might be able to feel it.
The realization hit Ariya like ice water.
“You’re saying he can sense me?
“Yes.”
Through you, Kael nodded grimly.
The clearing fell silent again.
Then suddenly,a deep, powerful howl rolled across the forest.
Closer this time and much closer.
The sound sent a shockwave through the bond.
Ariya gasped as a foreign presence brushed against her senses.
Cold, Sharp and very aware.
A male voice echoed faintly through her mind.
So this is the girl.
Her breath caught.
Kael stepped in front of her instantly, eyes blazing gold.
“Eamon,” he growled.
Ariya’s heart pounded.
Because the voice came again.
Closer.
Hello, little moonblood.
The war had just become personal.
