Chapter 1

Today started out like any other day, very early. Chancey woke p at around 4 am. She definitely was a morning person, just like her father. Oddly enough he never seems to be around when she wakes up. I heard little footsteps rapidly approaching her door. It suddenly flung open and in ran this 2’ angel with her big bright green eyes and long unruly curly black hair. “Momma, wake up, it’s so beautiful outside. The day is wasting away, come on I hungry!” I quickly cover m6 head with the blanket. “Momma isn’t here right now. Please leave a message after the beep…BEEP.” Chancey giggled. “Well, this message is for mommy, I love you whole bunches!” She giggled again as she jumped on the solid mass lying next to me. As I was recovering from the pile-driver that I’d just received, I flung the covers off and proceeded to tickle my precious little girl. Suddenly Chancey stopped laughing and sprang up so fast that she almost smashed her head into my chin. “Daddy! I’m so glad that you are here!” She catapulted herself into her father’s waiting arms. At that moment I couldn’t have felt happier with my life. I had thought that with Brent Cummings out of the way that I could finally take a breather before the next threat came along, but with the career as a cop I would never have a ‘normal’ life. I was going to join my family for breakfast but unfortunately my phone rang at that moment. I let out a sigh of resignation as I reached over and answered my phone. “Ryans.” I mouthed ‘I love you’ to Xavier when Mack’s voice greeted me. “I don’t mean to disturb your morning but there is something that you should see. I’m down at South Side Market, at a crime scene. I will see you in about 20 minutes.” Xavier could see by the way my face paled that I’d received some bad news. He looked at me softly with a warm smile on his face. “You have to go to work…don’t you?” I sighed when I heard the disappointment in his question. I walked over to him, wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him. “That was Mack, he’s at a crime scene and says that I need to be there ASAP.” I said when I could breathe again. He looked at me. “Then what is the problem, why do you look uneasy?” “I don’t have a very good feeling about this, something feels off.” I reluctantly removed myself from his embrace. If I didn’t do it now I would be really late arriving at the crime scene. I put a smile on my face. “Hey Chancey, honey, can you go get dressed for mommy? We can swing by and grab something to eat in a minute.” I waited patiently for my little munchkin to leave to her room before I used my speed to make it to the door and lock it before she came back. I then turned a mischievous look in my eyes as I stared at my mate with hunger. “I think that wd need some personal time to ourselves for the next 15 minutes.” After I said that I could smell his arousal spike, the scent of him is intoxicating! Xavier instinctively pulled me closer to his body so that we were flush against each other. He crashed his lips against mine in a passionate kiss that almost knocked me on my ass. I felt that my air was being sucked out of me but the intensity of his kiss kept me in place. He finally pulled back enough to place his forehead against mine and breathed in my scent as he was trying to get his breathing under control. He opened his eyes and just stared at me for a bit before talking again. “I love you so much! I love our daughter and she has been looking so much like you everyday that it scares me sometimes. She also has your drive and sense of justice that she sometimes puts herself in danger and it scares me to death!” He kissed my lips again but softly. “I don’t want you to go to the crime scene. I have been having a really bad feeling for some time now. I would never be able to live with myself if anything were to happen to you or Chancy.” I cupped his face and gently kissed him. “Honey, I have to go it’s my job. Nothing is going to happen to me or Chancy.” I leaned in again to kiss Xavier with all my love when we heard a soft tapping of our door. “Mommy, Unka Mack is on the phone for you.” I sighed and unlocked the door to grab the phone from Chancy. When she opened the door and caught the sight of her daughter she could not help but laughing out loud. Chancy was covered from head-to-toe in flour. She clearly didn’t listen to her father when he told her to go get dressed, instead she took it upon herself to make breakfast for everyone. I looked back over my shoulder at Xavier. “Honey, can you please help our little chef with the kitchen while I talk to Uncle Mack?” He nodded as he scooped Chancy up and brushed a soft kiss on my lips then walked out the door. I let out a sigh as I headed toward the bathroom to start my shower. I put the phone to my ear as Mack let out an impatient groan. I chuckled to myself when I heard him. “What’s up Mack?” “What was all the laughter about and why can I hear water on in the background?” Mack asked, irritated. I rolled my eyes at him. “Chancy was attempting to cook for us as a surprise.” I soon focused on why I was being called right now. “So, are you going to tell me what is going on?” I asked as I stripped my clothes so I could shower and be on my way. After a beat of silence, I sighed. “Fine, let me hop in the shower and I will be done by the time that you drive your ass over to pick me up. Oh and bring coffee!” I heard him let out a breath that he had been holding. “The usual right? I’ll be there in about 30 minutes.” Before I could utter a word he had already disconnected the call. I growled in frustration as I stood under the shower stream with steam rolling out. I let the heat of the water ease some of the tension from my shoulders. I could already tell that this is going to be a very long day. I showered in under 15 minutes, a record in my book, dressed in my work clothes then stopped by the kitchen to see the damage. I was surrounded by the smell of hazelnut and chocolate! “Something smells wonderful.” I pecked her on her temple. “What’s for breakfast?” Chancy swirled around to see me with a big bright smile on her happy face. “Waffles!” I scanned the room and noticed four place settings at the table. I quirked my eyebrow in confusion as I looked at Xavier. “Who is the fourth plate for?” Chancy looked at me like I had grown a second head. “It is for Unka Mack.” I looked from my daughter to Xavier and back again. Xavier shrugged his shoulder. “She insisted that he have some breakfast to start the day.” I smiled as a warmth spread through my chest. I loved my little family so much that it hurt sometimes. I quickly shoveled in a couple of bits before I heard the honking of a car horn and I knew my ride had just arrived. “That’s Mack I got to run. I will see you both later tonight.” I had just turned toward the door before I turned and grabbed Mack’s plate and quickly exited my home. “I love you both, have a good day!” I called out as I shut the door behind me. I quickly walked toward Mack’s car and easily slid into the passenger seat and buckled. I then gave him his plate. He looked at me questioningly. I smiled. “It’s a present from your niece.” He smiled. “Aww, how thoughtful, what is it?” I smirked at him. “Waffles.” His eyes lit up. “Girl knows a way to my heart!” Then we both just laughed.
