Chapter 7: Lessons

1462 Words
Adriana had started off with the basics, teaching me only what I needed to know to begin with. She has been giving me these lessons for well over a week now, and Fafnir keeps coming to visit. He is like a vulture that keeps coming back for more. I haven't seen Kalen but a couple of times and those were when I had lunch with my father. Today I learned that he would be permanently guarding my chambers till after my marriage to Fafnir, at which time I will be guarded by my "Husbands" guards. I was not thrilled at the idea of it, but I still had time to convince Kalen to apologize to his parents and gain his right to marry me. I already knew that it would not be easy for Kalen and that Fafnir would not give me up easily, but Kalen was their first born, and is the law for him to marry me. In every noble family, the fairy law states that the first born has the right to marry royalty before the other children. If something happens to or with the first that was when the second child or third child got the opportunity to marry into royalty. If I had been born a male I would be marrying the third child, Kalen sister. Right now Adriana had me reading the history of fairies for the day and at this point she was rambling on about something. It was fairly late in the evening and we had already had supper, and at this point I was to tired to pay attention to anything. "Are you paying attention Freya?"Adriana asked. "Sorry I was just thinking that's all." I said. "Well if you don't pay attention then your father will get upset and you know that." Adriana said. "I was just worried about marrying Fafnir that is all." I said. "If you can get Kalen to suck up his pride, his family is ready to take him back and let him marry you." Adriana said. "The last time we talked about he got upset and left and I have barely seen him since." I replied. "Would you like me to try princess?" She asked. "I feel that it would be in vain." I said. "I can be persuasive at times." She said. "You mean beat him till he complies." I said. "I don't beat I simply convince." She said with a grin. "Yeah with simple beatings that will make him run from me." I laughed. "I am going to let you go early." She and disappeared before I could protest. I stood up and headed for the door, but stopped when I seen Kalen. He was standing there, but for some reason he looked different. He was standing in the shadows, so I really couldn't see him. I started to step forward but he did before I could and now I could see what was different, he was dressed similar to his brother now and wore a crown. Does this mean that he apologized or did my father do something so that we could be together. "Kalen, you look different." I said. "I went to my parents and they accepted me back, but under one condition." He said. "What do they want?" I asked. "If I cannot find Fafnir a suitable bride, which they will approve of, then they will never allow me to marry you." Kalen said. "Are you a nobleman than?" I asked. "Yes I am, but Fafnir is still engaged to you till can find him a suitable wife." Kalen replied. "Oh, so you still can't be with me?" I asked in a whisper. "If you give me time, I will find a bride that my parents approve of, which is not hard, and then I will become your husband." Kalen said. "What if Fafnir catches onto what you are doing?" I asked. "By now you should know that in every noble family the parents pick who their children will marry. Fafnir knows that I am to chose him a new bride, and he is angry, but my parents have warned him against interfering." Kalen replied. "What will they do if he does?" I asked. "They will disown him like they did me." Kalen replied. "How long will it take you to find a bride?" I asked. "I intend to introduce the lady of the western lands to him. She will make a suitable bride and my mother agrees, but we still need to talk to my father." Kalen said. "Oh, so I will be engaged to him till your father returns?" I asked. "Yes you will dear and I intend to marry you before my dear brother can get fathers approval of my new engagement." Fafnir replied from behind and snaked his arm around my waist. "Get your hands off her Fafnir." Kalen ground out. "As far as I am concerned I can touch her if I want, she is my bride. Did you honestly think I was going down without a fight. The crown will be mine, and then you can have the little wench and do as you please with her." Fafnir said with a smirk and felt his warm lips press against mine. He pushed me against the wall kissed me harder. Though he was cold hearted he was a good kisser, but this was not what I wanted. It was suppose to be Kalen kissing me not Fafnir. I tried to pull away, but his grip tightened and then he was on the floor about 30 feet from me. I looked up to see that Kalen was beyond angry and looked ready to kill Fafnir, and he could. Fairy law says that if two brothers disagree over the marriage law the eldest can kill the youngest without any consequences. If Fafnir killed Kalen he would stand trail for it, and my father would kill him as well. Though his parents weren't completely complying with the law, they were still doing what they thought was best. Fafnir was engaged to me first and therefore he has every right to try and fight for me. He will not win, but it will be worth a shot. In the end Kalen will marry me and Fafnir will marry the lady from the western lands. "Next time I will not go easy on you and I will kill you." Kalen said. "Father will never agree to marry me off to the Lady of the Western lands, and he will let me marry Freya and become king." Fafnir said as he stood up. "We will see, but in the end I will marry Freya." Kalen said. "Do I not have a choice in what I want to do anymore?" I asked. "You do have a choice, but at the end of the day, one of us will marry you and that is just how it has to be." Kalen said and he with a sad look in his eyes. "What if I am not ready to be married?" I asked. "I know that you are not ready, but in the world we live in, there is no choice." Kalen replied. "I will marry her one way or other, because I will become a king." Fafnir. "Fafnir you are not suited to be a ruler of any type so let it go already." Kalen said. "As of right now she is my bride so you step away from her, or you pay. You know the law, you can't touch her till I am officially engaged to the Lady of the Western lands." Fafnir said. Kalen stepped aside and watched as Fafnir took me by the hand and led me away. I wrenched my arm free and slapped him and ran to my room and locked the door. Why didn't Kalen try to stop him, or take me away from this land. I threw myself on the bed and cried because my life has turned into one big mess and I wanted see my mother. Only my mother could understand what I was going through. By now I am sure that she knows of my engagement, but like my father she will nothing to stop it. I hated the laws here and wished that I could run away, but they would hunt me down and kill me, and I could never put Kalen through that. After laying there crying for what seemed like forever I heard a voice. "Freya child, come to your balcony quickly." I knew that voice, it was my mothers voice. I would recognize it in the worst of storms. "Mother is that you?" I asked as I approached the figure standing on my balcony. "Yes my child it is me." She replied.
