Chapter Twenty-One“Lauren, wake up,” Scarlett whispered, gently shaking her best friend out of her slumber.
She rubbed her eyes, sitting up on the straw mattress. “Scarlett? What's wrong?”
“Shh,” she warned. “The guards are outside. A man came to Hocken tonight. He told me that he was a friend of your Ma's and that he was coming back to take us home.”
Lauren flinched, edging forward. “Who was he?” she urged as her eyes opened wider.
“He said his name was Jake. He was having supper at the inn. I served him and he was talking to me. I was dragged away by Ursa and beaten. Then a little while later, he found me at the back of the inn and told me that he will return for us.”
