This time, Reid took me to the old railroad tracks just outside the town. He wanted to go somewhere no one we knew could see us. It was a quiet place, much like my empty hospital room, but here I could move around, see things I haven't seen in months since the slavery war. The tracks stopped beneath the bridge that people took to leave town, but Reid kept we far from the bridge. He said it was a bad area. I didn't ask questions. I was just glad to be out of the hospital again. After the short reunited moment two days ago with Jude, I had to clear my mind. Reid seen this and we snuck from the jail (hospital) as soon as we could.
Unlike the first time, though, when we went to The Falls, my stomach had grown and I was looking like a medium size pumpkin. I felt huge and only Reid was there to comfort me and tell me otherwise. "Just think of it as hiding a ball in your shirt," Reid teased.
I rolled my eyes at him and jumped from the rail. The metal of the tracks were rusted and broke off just under the bridge. These tracks were obviously vacant for years. Unknownly, I was trailing close to the bridge and was yanked backwards as Reid rushed over to me. Before falling backwards into his arms, I caught sight of a large chair to my left, sitting high on a cement platform. Unusual for a chair to be sitting there, but I was occupied with the annoyed Reid that held onto me. "What was that for?!" I growled.
"I told you not to go over there! It's dangerous!" Scowling, I brushed my bare legs off. It was hot today, a day I could have used The Falls. Thank goodness Reid brought me shorts.
"What's so dangerous about an abandoned track and an old rotted chair?" I argued. He didn't answer as he pulled me towards an old cart, left behind years ago from one of the last trains to pass through. He climbed up on it, turning to pull me up behind him, and he walked inside as if it was a house. I first poked my head inside to see if it was safe, when I seen Reid sitting down looking out one of the small windows, I climbed inside and sat next to him. The silence between us was a little awkward, not a bad awkward, but I felt something was bugging him and I had a good feeling it was about me.
"Nothing is wrong," he said, reading my mind. He didn't even look at me. I raised my eyebrows at him in shock. "I knew what you were about to ask. It's got nothing to do with you...not really." He dropped his head to look at his hands in his lap. I searched his face, looking past the unshaved stuble that covered his neck and chin. I knew it had to do with me, and he was horrible at trying to hide it. I clicked my tongue at him and shook my head.
"Well, since it's not, then you can tell me!" I said, holding my head high. He raised his eyebrows, smirking at my bravery. I waited for him to drop his head and laugh.
"It's nothing, I promise."
"Hmm, well...okay. Guess who came to see me a couple days ago," I said. He shrugged. I smiled, reaching over close to him to whisper as if other people were there. As I leaned closer, I rested my hand on his knee so I wouldn't face plant the cart floor. That's when everything went black.
"Mom! Where are you?!" A small voice came from the dark. I looked around frantically. For who, I had no idea. But I had a feeling it was someone I knew and loved dearly. I turned every which way, searching for the way the voice had come. The train lights flickered, on, off, on, off. Everytime they'd turn on, bodies lined the cart I had been sitting in. Blood covered the windows, the floor, and the door. A small hand print of blood was on the door handle, and I reached out for it. "MOM!" I jumped at the voice, and turned in a rush.
"Where are you?!" I yelled. Outside the windows, all I could see was brick walls. We were in a tunnel, and we were moving fast. Faster than a transporting train should be going. The lights flickered on, and this time, didn't go off. There, in the middle of the train cart, stood a young girl. She was drenched in blood, her hair lining her back as if just getting out of a pool. The pink and white dress, which reached her knees, was now spotted red. And I gasped! She looked like...me!
"Mom." Her voice was now calm. Like nothing was happening around us. "Why'd you let daddy kill me?"
"W-what?! I would never..."
"You let him hurt me, mommy. He hurt you, and me...why'd you let him back in our lives? Why mommy, why?!" The lights went out and I was swollowed into darkness.
"NO! I would never let him hurt you!" The train came to a halt, and I went flying forward. My feet left the floor, and it was like I was a bird. But I was frightened. I let out an ear splitting scream before crashing through the front window.
"BELL!" I sucked in air like it was my first ever breath. I could feel my eyes roll back forward in my head, and Reid's face come into view. He was terrified. More terrified than I've ever seen a vampire. I sat up in a sweat and looked around me. The cart was old, dirty and rusted. The seats were covered with dust and broken glass. There was no door to it, just a gap where it should have been. It was runned down from the years it had been left here.
"Bell, are you alright?!" Reid's hands were on my back and I turned to look up at him. All I could think about was that little girl, she'd called me mommy. Was that my child? Why would she say her daddy hurt her? Jude wouldn't...no! "We need to get you back to the hospital!"
**
It was no different than any other boring, quiet night I sat in this place. I begged Reid to stay with me, after what had happened back at the train cart, I was too afraid to be alone. Neither of us knew what'd happened. Reid said I just fainted. But it was more real than a dream...or nightmare. My attention went to the door, where a soft knock sounded. I didn't have to answer it as Mikayla made her way inside quietly. "Hey!" She said with a smile.
"Hey!" Tonight, she wore a blue gown, with a pair of pants under them. Her long, blonde hair was pulled back and I could see the little make up she wore. Her pale skin, much paler than any normal vampire, made the make up stand out behind her yellow eyes. She sat at my feet, and I crossed my legs in front of me. "Where could I get some of those?!" I pointed at her hospital pants.
"Oh," she said, looking down at her legs. "They only give them to you when you're going out. You have to wear their outfits. They really aren't comfortable."
I giggled. "I'd love me a pair. These gowns are so irritating. They untie in the back when I'm out of my room. I don't want to scare any vampires with my tan butt." She laughed, covering her mouth and closing her eyes.
"That's funny. So, how was your day out?" She asked. I shrugged. I didn't want to tell her about the episode I had with Reid on the train, mostly because I didn't want to relive it. But I didn't want to scare her with my nightmare stories. "Where'd you go?"
"The train tracks. It was okay, I mean he wouldn't let me near the bridge. It's kind of creepy down there," I said. She c****d her head to the side and listened closing to something; I'm guessing the baby's heart.
"Sounds like baby had a great time. His heart is beating pretty good!"
I narrowed my eyes at her. "You keep calling it a he...do you know what it is?" I asked. She shook her head.
"No, I'm just use to saying he. It's what we called my little brother since he didn't have a name yet. If it was my choice, I would have named him Chase." I laughed. At first she didn't see the humor, but as she watched me, she started laughing herself.
"It's cute!" I said. There was footsteps outside the door and we both froze. We listened carefully to the voices on the other side.
"Room 1801! Stat!" a male voice called.
"Patient 101, number 1193!" Another came. Mikayla gasped quietly.
"That's George! He's a friend of my father's!" She whispered. We listened as their footsteps continued down the hall and eventually it was quiet again. We shared a look before sitting in complete silence for a few minutes. "Do you think he's okay?"
I shrugged. I didn't know anything about this place. I had no idea what those numbers were. They didn't call people by their names around here? What was I, then? I looked down at my wrist band, in which I forgot I had been wearing. Patient 285, number 34532. Doctors rarely come in and out of my room, because Jordana is one herself, so I never been called by my number. It's weird to think people around here don't have a name on the inside. I looked up at Mikayla, who seemed off in a daze. I tapped her with my foot and she jumped.
"Huh?" She asked. I set my head back on the pillow and smiled at her. She watched me for a long time before speaking again. "So, is that Reid guy the father?" She poked me in the stomach.
"What?! Oh, no! Defintaly not!" I shuddered at the thought. I like Reid, but I never saw was together in that way. He was very gorgeous, but I was with Jude...I think. "No, his best friend is. At least, I hope he wants to be."
"Well, if he doesn't, don't dwell on it. My mother isn't with my real father. He left her when slavery hit. He went to a slavery auction, bought himself a young human slave, and forced her to marry him. I have no idea what he's doing now that slavery has died down. I wonder how it stopped so fast." I bit my bottom lip. Of course, she didn't know I was the reason the world went back to normal. I didn't even know if she knew of the prophecy. She seemed young, a bit young to know of anything that dated back.
"I guess I should get back. My aunt is coming to get me. Are you going to the dance next weekend?" She asked.
"Dance?"
"Yeah, they hold a dance every couple months here. It's like prom, but for sick vampires. You should go!" She smiled at me then hopped from my bed. She left without another word, and once again, I was left here alone. I tried thinking of this dance, about the beautiful young girls dancing with handsome men. Everyone wearing elegant prom dresses. It reminded me of the time Jake went to prom with his ex girlfriend. They both looked amazing. I've always wanted to go to a dance. But who would I go with?
My eyes began to shut and I silently prayed that I wouldn't be slipping into one of my nightmares...
