Chapter Nine

Mikalya POV "But dad, why can't we go?" I cried. I stuck my bottom lip out and pouted at him, hoping he would feel bad and fall for it. He only smiled and patted my foot. "It's on the day you have testing. You know you can't miss that," he said. "Can't you have it rescheduled? This is a once in a lifetime chance!" I crossed my arms in front of my chest and bounced up and down on my bed. Dad just chuckled and shook his head. "Fine! I'll just die sad and alone!" Mom gave a small gasp and I tried smiling at her. "Kidding, mom," I said. Dad shook his head again and stood up. I watched him hold his hand out to mom, and they both walked to my bedside to kiss me on the forehead like they did every day before leaving. "We'll be back in the morning. Goodnight sweetheart," mom said. I kissed them both back, and watched as they left the room. Mom turned around to give me a tearful look then followed dad out. As soon as the door clicked shut, I jumped from the bed and crossed the room to peak out into the hall. Mom and Dad were dragging their feet down the hall in the opposite direction, which gave me my chance to slip out and sneak down the other side of the hospital. I could hear Mom whimpering, and Dad assuring her that I will be fine and they will see me tomorrow. Mom always cried when she left me. Everyday for the past six months I've been in here. It bothered me at first, but I got use to the nurses and doctors coming in and out. I've made some real nice friends here. Tapping lightly on the door I was searching for, I cracked it open and slipped inside. On the hospital bed, her back to me, I watched the young human girl I've come to know since she's been here. I listened for her steady heart, and then walked to her bedside. She wasn't fast asleep, but I could tell she was getting there. The little one inside of her, on the other hand, was awake and alert that I was here. His heart started beating fast, and by the way the girl jerked in front of me, I could tell he was kicking her hard. Her hand moved across her stomach at the kicks and she groaned. "He's not going to stop anytime soon," I said. She jumped and turned around to me. Her face was pale and she had gotten skinnier since the last time I've seen her. The blue veins in her face was popping out, and her tired eyes were blood shot. Despite the rude awakening, she smiled and sat up to greet me. "Hey," she said, her voice cracking. "I'm sorry for waking you." "Oh, no! You didn't. This child has been kicking me like crazy all day," she said. She smiled again and looked down at her exposed belly. The veins shown more in her stomach, and it was bigger than I remembered. "Are you going to give birth soon?" I asked, sitting down in the chair next to the bed. "I'm not sure. I don't know how pregnancy works." She brushed her hand across her stomach and sat back in bed. "What have you been doing? Sneaking out?" I giggled. "My parents just left. I didn't want to sit alone and I wanted to see how the baby was doing. May I feel?" She nodded and I reached out to touch her. Once my hand touched her stomach, the baby's movement stopped. And for a second, I thought I could hear it crying inside. I pressed my lips together and giggled. "What?" "He's not sure who is touching him. He doesn't know me." My hand slid to the middle of her stomach and the baby kicked. "Did you feel that?! "I did!" She said. Sliding my hand across her whole stomach, I tried getting him to kick again but he didn't seem to like me anymore. Disappointed, I sat back in the chair and stared. Seeing this, the girl slid her gown back over her stomach and smiled at me. "How was going out? Must have been nice." "It was fun. My parents won't let me go to the Carnival though. It's supposed to be really big this year but it's on the same day I go in for testing." I rolled my eyes and pouted. The girl laughed. "How about I talk to your parents? Maybe they will let you go if I'm there with you," she said. Excitement rose through me and I jumped to my feet. "Really?! You'd do that for me?!" "Sure, it will be fun!" I jumped across the bed and hugged her. She took it by surprise and jumped in fear, but hugged my back when I wouldn't let her go. Finally, I pulled back, not able to keep from smiling. "Well, I better be going. You're friend is on the way," I winked at her and turned around just as the door opened. I smiled at the red headed boy walking in, and skipped down the hall back to my room.
