Reid's POV
It wasn't until we reached The Falls that she realized where we were heading, and when her eyes set on the large waterfall just ahead of us, they grew wide. Her head turned up to me and fright crossed her face. Something I haven't seen since the day Jonan told her she was pregnant. But, she had nothing to worry about and I wanted her to know that. I wanted her to know that with me, she was safe. Nothing was going to hurt her. Maybe she got the message because she turned back to the roaring waters and took a deep breath.
I continued on my way, pulling her along behind me. I picked my steps carefully, not wanting her to slip and fall. The wet rocks beneath us threatened to trip us and each time Bell slipped, she would grab a hold of my arms tight and close her eyes. She would never hit the ground because I would always catch her in my arms and pull her up. Soon, she seemed to realize not even slippery rocks were going to take her down with me around. Once we were on grass again, she started skipping along side the tree line while humming a song. Her hands smacked the leaves as she held it out. The look on her face told me she was enjoying herself, and that's all I cared about.
We were soon hovering over the edge of the falls, looking down into the pool below. Well, I was at least. I turned to see Amabell's eyes glued to the edge as she slowly stepped away from it. The night on the Ferris Wheel came back to me and I chuckled. Her eyes set on me but she wasn't laughing.
"It's alright," I assured. But she didn't budge. This was much more higher than any Ferris Wheel and I could tell I wasn't going to get her to just walk over here. "Okay, let's go lower." I held my hand out to her and waited. Her eyes darted from me to the edge of The Falls. I decided that she wasn't going to move on her own so I grabbed her hand.
"Reid..." She started. My body went numb when she said my name.
"Don't worry. I've got you." Her eyes were set on me and as we neared the edge, they were locked. They weren't moving for the life of her. My heels were off the edge and I could see the worry in her eyes as I started leaning back. "Just keep looking at me." And as I slipped off the edge, she kept her eyes locked with mine. She took in a deep breath as the wind rushed around us. Her hair flew up, the hair tie holding it up getting lost with the wind. In seconds, she was in my arms and we were landed on a boulder right above the water. The look of terror didn't leave her face until she took in her surroundings. When she saw that we were near the ground, she relaxed in my arms.
"See, not too bad," I laughed. A smile spread across her face. I didn't let her go until she pulled away, to look over the edge into the crystal clear, blue waters. I watched her expression. You would have been able to see the excitement she showed from the top of the falls. "Want to go in?"
That's when the excitement wiped away and she stared up at me like I had just said something crazy. It wasn't the first time I've been down here. I've swam in The Falls many times. This was the first time I was accompanied by someone; someone I knew I shouldn't be here with but just couldn't help. Without waiting for her to reply, I pulled my shirt over my head and threw it at our feet. She watched as I slipped out of my jeans and dangled near the edge of the boulder. I shot her a quick glance over my shoulder. "Coming?" And I was gone. Falling through the air until I dove under the surface of the cold waters. I swam deeper towards the ground, looking around me through the sparkling water. After a second, I kicked back up to the surface, shaking my hair out of my eyes and looking up at Amabell. She was on her knees, staring down at me.
"You do remember that I'm pregnant, right?" She called down to me. Her voice echoed off the walls of the rocks.
"Don't worry, the water won't make you go into labor." She rolled her eyes but didn't move. "What was the point of ditching the hospital bed if you weren't going to have fun?"
"I'm having fun!" She stood back up and placed her hands on her hips. She seemed to be re thinking coming out here with me. Then, she pulled her own shirt over her head, tossing it down with mine, and slipped out of her pants. From down here, it barely looked as if she was pregnant. Her stomach poked out hardly. She took in a deep breath, and closed her eyes. Before jumping of the edge, she let out a little scream.
SPLASH!
She disappeared under the surface. I waited, a smile printed on my face and I searched for her until the shadow of her body showed right in front of me. As she kicked her way up, I grabbed a hold of her arms. She gasped for air when she broke surface, and smiled at me once she opened her eyes. "It's cold," She said, sounding a lot like a little child. I splashed her, kicking away from her and floating on my back. From down here, you could barely see the sun. The sound of the waterfall was the only thing we could hear. Not even the loud cars zooming by in town could match The Falls. It was peaceful, and that's why I came here.
"Reid," Amabell said finally, after so long.
"Yeah." I looked down at her, my hands behind my head as I floated atop the water. Her hair was slicked back, her blue eyes staring right at me. It was times like these I had to remind myself she belonged to Jude. But, it was also times like this that reminded me why I was here. Someone had to watch over the girl.
"Why do you think Jude doesn't want to see me? Does he think it's not his...is he disgusted with me?" Her questions made me kick myself forward so I was facing her. I swam to her, grabbing her and pulling her to me. She didn't seem bothered by this.
"Why do you think like that? It's hard for him to see the girl he loves being torn. You're being slaughtered, Amabell. And keeping this thing won't help anything. What if it kills you after it's born?" She watched me carefully, taking in everything I just said. I don't blame the girl for thinking Jude didn't want her anymore. I didn't have the heart to tell her why he was really not showing up at the hospital.
"So...? Do you think it's..." She trailed off. I narrowed my eyes, not getting what she was talking about at first. "The father?"
Realizing what she was talking about, I sighed. "Let's not talk about this right now. We're here to have fun." I gave her a quick smile before wrapping her legs around me and pulling her under. Under water, she held her eyes shut tight. I laughed, bubbles coming from my mouth, and tapped her cheek. Her eyes opened and she glanced around us. It was no different seeing under water than it would be above. It was clear enough to see every freckle on her face.
Huh, that's something I never seen before...
She laughed, bubbles escaping her own mouth, and kicked away from me. One of her kicks landed me in the stomach and I groaned as I watched her disappear through the water. Soon, she was gone from my sight. At first, I didn't think much of it. I resurfaced and expected to see her right in front of me. But when I didn't, I felt an urge to call out her name. I felt...concerned.
"Bell?" I called. There was no answer. The only sound coming from the rushing fall. I glanced above me at the boulder in which our clothes lie. Maybe she was climbing up. But she wasn't there either. "Amabell?!" I started for the rocks and clung to the side. The waters were empty of everyone but myself and that's when I really started to panic. There was no where else she could have gone, and I didn't want to have to explain to everyone that I lost her because I snuck her out of the hospital and took her to a dangerous place.
Then, her head popped up from behind the falls. She wore a smile bigger than her face and she was looking right at me. I sighed, a bit irritated that she didn't answer my calls, and rolled my eyes. Her laughs bounced off the rocks and she was gone again. I dropped from the rock I hung to and swam after her, diving under the water fall then resurfacing on the other side. Bell sat on a low platform, a boulder that had flattened and fell from it's spot above us. Her feet dangled in the water and as I neared, she splashed me. "It's amazing, huh?" She said, looking around her. It was dark on this side of the falls, the light from the sun that barely peaked through the rocks brightened the waters, so it was like there were lights beneth us. We were seperated from the world outside.
"Yeah," I replied, pulling myself up next to her. Our voices echoed around us. We had to speak over the rushing waters. "It's great! And it makes everything better with you here!"
"What?!" She yelled, not hearing me. I stared at her, hesitating on saying it again. I didn't mean to say that. It just...came out. I was sinking into a hole I wasn't going to be able to get out, if I didn't stop these feelings that weren't mine. Amabell wasn't meant to be with me, she had Jude. But, that's the thing. He isn't here...
"Do you think we should get back? Jonan is stopping by tonight," she yelled. I nodded. Grabbing her hand, we jumped from the rock and swam back to where our clothes lie.
**
Sneaking her back in wasn't as hard as getting her out. Once we were inside the hospital, we took the elevators up, due to Bell having sharp pains in her side. She'd been complaining about something kicking her in the ribs ever since we left The Falls, so we decided it would be best to take it easy, even if we got caught. Luckily, we didn't and she was back in her bed as if she had never left. I slipped the blanket over her and leaned down to kiss her forehead.
"Thanks for today, Reid. It was great," She said. I smiled at her.
"Yeah, I had a great time," I said. She yawned, covering her mouth, then set her head back. A couple times she winced at the pain, and I couldn't help but feel sorry for her. I turned around, telling myself it wasn't me who should be comforting her, and reached for the door handle.
"Reid." She stopped me. I glanced over my shoulder at her. "Can you tell Jude...I miss him? I really want to see him tonight." Our eyes were locked. I wanted to tell her so bad that he was just an ass and not even me could get him out here. But I had to try...for her. I nodded, not saying a word, and left her in the room alone, with nothing but the television to keep her occupied.
Before I had exited the hospital, I passed the man from the room we had slipped into. He gave me a quick smile, two sodas in his hands, and nodded to me. I returned the friendly gestures and made my way back to the house.
"How's she doing?" Madeline asked as I sat down at the counter in the kitchen. I sat my head down on my hands and shrugged at her. "What'd you guys do all day?"
I narrowed my eyes at the tone she gave. "Nothing. What else are you supposed to do at a lame hospital?!" I growled.
"It was just a question. Don't get snippy!" She hissed and turned to leave. Jordana stood next to where Madeline had been, eyeing me the whole time. I rolled my eyes and turned from her. It was dark outside, and the moon was just rising above the house. I sat there wondering what Amabell was doing right now, when Jake walked into the room. He went to the fridge, and when he opened it, I sat up straight and raised my eyebrows.
"When did we get so much human food?! Where's all the blood?!" The fridge no longer held the packets and jugs of blood it did before. All I could see were gallons of milk, orange juice, fruits and vegetables. There were uncooked meats and pudding cups. Jordana shrugged, watching Jake the whole time. I wasn't even sure if either of the had heard me.
"There's humans in the house. We have to feed them," Jordana answered.
"Then, where's the blood?" Jordana turned to me, her eyes burning like fire.
"If you're so worried about the damn blood then why don't you look down in the cellar! There's other things to worry about than that!" She stormed from the room, leaving me there to be glared down with disappointing looks from Jake.
"She's been like that all day. She's extremely worried for Bell," Jake said, snapping open a can of coke. I jumped from the stool and turned away from him. He was the last person I wanted to see tonight. His eyes, the way he would look at you, reminded me too much of Amabell.
"Yeah...Where's Jude?" I asked.
"Not sure. His room maybe? Why, what's up?" I didn't answer him. I hurried down the halls towards his room; a room I hadn't been in since before the attacks. I didn't bother talking to Jude anymore. He'd never listen to what I'd have to say, or even look at me. All he did was stare up at his ceiling like a zombie. It was quite annoying so I was always at the hospital or out doing something else.
The picture frames were all empty. That's the way it's been for weeks now. It caused the house to fall into an unfamiliar silence. Mark's room was completely deserted. Amabell's hasn't been touched. When I reached Jude's room, I felt a rush of sorrow come through me. For a moment, I missed how things use to be. And when my eyes fell on Jude, laying on the bed staring up at the ceiling just like every other day since Bell was put in the hospital, I couldn't help but look away from the pitiful sight. It took me a good ten minutes to take a deep breath and walk up to the foot of the bed. It didn't surprise me that he didn't look at me. He didn't even say hello. It was like I wasn't even there.
This was what he had become...
"Have you been laying there all day?" I asked. But, he didn't answer. His eyes never moved from one spot on the ceiling. I'd lost my best friend long ago. "Well, your father is making another trip up to the hospital. You going?" I tried again. Still, he didn't respond.
His clothes, the very same he had been wearing since I last seen him a week ago, were covered in dirt, telling me he had been out in the garden. Why was he so dirty? My question answered it's self when I seen a bushel of the Voodoo Lillies lieing by his bed. Dirt tracked the floor and most of the pedals were torn off. I smacked my hand to my forehead and sighed.
"Look, Amabell is asking for you. She wants to see you...she's worried!" He didn't move. I noticed him twitch an inch when I said her name, but other than that, nothing. Now I was getting angry. I leaned over him, grabbing him by the collar of his shirt, and ripped him to his feet. He didn't bother fighting back. His eyes fell to mine, the color washed out from them. It was a sickening sight. "That girl has been beating herself up over this and all you are doing is sitting here feeling sorry for your self! You haven't changed a bit!"
"Do you know what she's been asking me?! She asks if you hate her...if you're disgusted with her! It's her who should be disgusted with you! Get your ass up, and for once, do something with your life! You don't deserve the love of that girl!"
For the first time in so long, a little bit of life showed in his dead eyes. It was anger, and his eyes narrowed, but it was worth seeing. His hands slipped over mine, which were still holding onto his shirt, and he dug his fingers into them. My hands were ripped from him and we stood there glaring between each other in silence. He brushed off his shirt, and with one last evil glare at me, he turned and walked from the room, dirt trailing behind him from his boots.
