Esi p.o.v
The class was in total silence after Esi has introduced herself to her new classmates. The whole class was motionless and the only things that were moving were the eyes of the students. Even the teacher was quiet.
Esi didn't understand why they were looking at her like that not only her but also the idiotic guy who wanted to show her his dominance in this school.
Without waiting for any permission, Esi Walked back to her seat where her friend Kojo was seated and smiling at her.
"Is that how weird the students in this school are? And why do they look at me like that?" She asked him.
" don't tell me you don't know why they are looking at you like that?" He asked her back
"Can you please answer my questions first?" She whispered since the teacher has already started with the lesson on the day.
"No, they are not weird. They are shocked to finally meet you in person since the Chief has announced the marriage of his son." He whispered back.
"Oh, that's great news. Did he want me to be the MC of his son's wedding?" She ignorantly asked
"Don't be a fool Esi."
"What? I'm confused and seeing people looking at me in the village is one thing that I can understand because I'm new here but all those pairs of eyes on me is annoying. And I don't think that I have something to do with the Cheif son's wedding." She said in a lower voice.
"I will tell you later. Let's focus for now." He said but Esi wasn't done talking as for the next few seconds she asked loudly for everybody to hear
"And who is that fool?"
All eyes turn to her. Some were laughing and some were looking at her with annoyance while her friend Kojo had his head under his table.
"Did you say something Esi?" The female teacher miss Araba asked.
Esi faked a cough before answering "no, ma'am I was just coughing" She said. She should stay out of trouble on her first day at school. Her father has already filled her ears with the way she should behave in school. Because there is only one school in this village so she better be on her best behaviour to avoid any kind of trouble that can lead to dismissal.
For the rest of the lesson, Esi sat quietly in her seat and was listening to her teachers attentively. Geography wasn't a difficult subject for Esi she only needed to listen to the teacher and that was all.
Aside from the stares, Esi keep on receiving during classes the rest of her lessons went well without any trouble. They were currently copying their homework went the bell rung signalling lunch break. Esi parked her belongings in her bag before walking out of the classroom. Her friend Kojo was just behind her both of them were walking out.
She and her friend had already agreed to sit understand the tree during lunch break and that is where they were both walking too. Despite the pair of eyes that she received from her fellow student Esi didn't grace them with her own eyes.
"So are you going to tell your friend what is wrong with you? Because I can clearly see that you are not yourself today." She said and broke the silence that was between them.
" It's nothing Esi, I'm good," he said but hey, who is he trying to lie to? It's Esi That we are talking about here.
"You know Kojo, I might be younger than you but that doesn't me that I can't see when someone is in dilemma. You can tell me whatever is bothering you. I might be of help you never know."
She offers while they took a sit on a vacant bench built just below the huge tree in the school compound.
The air around here was cool but bearable and the green surrounding makes the place more attractive. Now that she has the time to look around, she can attest to the beauty of this place.
Kojo sighed before he can tell his young friend what is bothering him even though he knows very well that she can't be to help him.
Because even his father nor anyone in the village can help him solve his problem. But if talking to someone might at least reduce some of his burdens then it's better he tries.
"It's about my Ama the girl who us to sit where you sat today." He said and paused for a moment
"What about her?" Esi asked impatiently while taking out the lunch that her stepmother made for her in the morning. This will be the first time Esi carried food to school.
Usually, her mother will make her eat the canteen food in her previous school which she never liked. But here, it's different her stepmother take good care of her like her real daughter and Esi love for her is beginning to grow.
With a mouth full, she looked up at Kojo who was also looking at her food. She saw him swallow his saliva. She wanted to laugh at the facial expression of her friend but she didn't want him to feel worse more than what he was feeling at the moment.
So without thinking twice, Esi offered to share her lunch with her only friend in the school and even in the village.
"So what about Ama?" She asked again. Her friend finished eating before he answered "Ama is the girl I want to marry." He said making Esi chocked on the water she was drinking.
"What!?" She shouted given her full attention to her friend who was looking at Esi with his face void of any kind of emotions. Seeing him like that she kept quiet and decided to listen to him.
"As I was saying Ama is the girl I plan to marry after we graduate from school. However, she was taking away from me" he said. Esi wanted to ask him something went they got interrupted by some unexpected people.
The couple Esi saw ravishing themselves this morning with the guy who walks without raising any dust. The one and only Kwame the school prefect.
The three came and stood before the two friends who were in their conversation. Esi saw how Kojo was looking at the guy who was banging the other girls in the morning with pure hatred. And the guy in return only smirked at him.
Meanwhile, the other girl in the group was quietly standing there looking at Esi like a movie. The guy that Esi now knew as Kwame was carrying a frow on his face he was looking between Esi and Kojo.
"Can we help you guys?" Esi was the one to break the silence again. She realised that she has been breaking the silence a lot of times today. When they say nothing she added, " since you have nothing to say, please leave us because the way you are standing in front of me, makes me feel dizzy." She saw how they look at her with a shocking expression.
"What are the both of you doing here all alone?" It was Kwame who asked
"And who are you to ask us that?" Esi replied to an angry Kwame
"Girls who are promised to someone are not supposed to talk to a guy in an open place like this," Kwame added
"Did you promise me to someone that I don't know? Are you my father to tell me what to do? If you have nothing else to say the three of you can leave"
She said back.
"You are my woman and my soon to be wife. I'm the only son of Nana the village Chief. Your father promises you to me. So you better stop talking to another man who is not your man." He said and Esi looked at him as if he lost his mind.
"Oh! You are the famous guy? I see." Esi look at him from head to toe and continued " So when they talk about men do you also include yourself in? Oh, oh wait don't tell me that you are also waiting to bang me as your friends did? No, wait? at your age what can you offer or provide for a woman? Do you have what it take to be a husband?" Esi bombarded him with questions that she couldn't answer.
the face of his friends turn pale that told her that they understood what she said earlier.
"Don't forget to tell your father that, he should continue to wait for his son's wedding because it's not going to happen." She added
The three couldn't say anything else they turned and left but before going far, the other guy said " Kojo I hope your girl will be juicy. I can't wait to have her under me."
That was the only thing Kojo needed to break loose. He runs towards the i***t and punches him repeatedly on his face. He only stopped when the teachers run to separate them.
Esi was lost and didn't know what to say or do. However, she was determined to find out soon. And the information she reviewed from Kwame today was still in her mind. Her father will have to terminate that marriage thing or else god forbid she will do something unforgettable in this village.
