Chapter2

Sera’s heart pounded in her chest as Lucas Strong settled into his chair at the head of the boardroom table. The man she had once given her heart to—and had it shattered by—was now the CEO of her father’s empire. His cold, calculating gaze swept across the table, as if assessing everyone in the room, but it lingered on her a fraction too long. For a moment, the air felt thick with unspoken tension. Sera hadn’t seen Lucas in years, not since the night they had shared together. A night filled with passion, and in the end, regret. She never imagined she would face him again, least of all here, in her father’s boardroom. Lucas broke the silence first, his voice steady and professional. “Miss Carter, I assume this has all come as a surprise.” She straightened in her seat, trying to regain control of her racing thoughts. “That’s an understatement,” she replied, her voice sharper than she intended. “I didn’t know my father was planning to leave me anything, let alone this.” The board members, previously observing quietly, exchanged glances. The tension between her and Lucas didn’t go unnoticed, though none of them dared comment on it. The man at Lucas’s right, a sharp-suited older gentleman with silver hair, cleared his throat. “Miss Carter, I’m Mark Jennings, head of the board. We were all saddened by your father’s passing, but we must now discuss the future of Carter Industries. As his only heir, you now hold the majority stake in the company.” Sera nodded stiffly, but inside, she was screaming. This wasn’t her world. She didn’t understand corporate takeovers or boardroom politics. She was an artist, someone who poured her soul into canvases, not business reports. How could she possibly take control of this vast empire? “We realize this is a difficult transition for you,” Mark continued, “but the board is here to help facilitate the changeover. Of course, with Mr. Strong’s continued leadership as CEO, we expect a smooth handover.” Lucas’s eyes remained fixed on her, calm but unyielding. “The company’s operations have been stable under my leadership. Your father and I had a strong partnership, and I intend to ensure that Carter Industries remains one of the most successful firms in the world.” There was no hint of warmth in his tone, no trace of the man who had once held her in his arms. He was all business now, a side of him she had only glimpsed before. Sera could hardly reconcile the Lucas she had once known with the one sitting across from her. She swallowed the lump in her throat. “I appreciate that, but... I’m not sure I’m the right person for this.” Her voice trembled slightly, betraying her nerves. “I’ve never been involved in the company before. Why would my father think I could handle this?” Mark exchanged a quick glance with Lucas, and Sera couldn’t help but feel like there was something they weren’t telling her.“ I don’t know why your father made this decision,” Lucas said, his voice softening just a fraction. “But I do know that he trusted you. He wouldn’t have left you in charge if he didn’t believe you were capable.” Sera wasn’t convinced. Her father had barely spoken to her in years. Their relationship had been strained since her mother’s death, and he had always wanted her to follow in his footsteps, to be a part of his world. She had refused back then, choosing her art over business. Was this his final attempt to pull her back into a life she had run from? She shifted uncomfortably in her seat, her palms damp with sweat. “And what exactly does that entail? What am I supposed to do now?” Mark leaned forward, folding his hands on the table. “For now, we suggest that you stay on as the majority shareholder. Lucas will continue to handle day-to-day operations, and you can gradually get involved in learning more about the business.” Lucas nodded in agreement. “You won’t be expected to dive into corporate management overnight. We’ll take things step by step.” There it was again, that carefully measured tone. Sera couldn’t shake the feeling that Lucas was hiding something beneath his composed exterior. She knew him well enough to know when he was holding back.“Fine,” Sera said, trying to suppress the knot of anxiety twisting in her stomach. “But I want to know everything. If I’m going to be a part of this, I need to understand what’s really going on in this company.” Lucas’s eyes flickered briefly, a shadow of something unreadable passing over his face. “Of course,” he said, his voice unwavering. The meeting continued with discussions about the company’s current standing, financial reports, and upcoming projects. Sera tried to keep up, but it was like being dropped into a foreign language class halfway through the semester. She nodded when she was expected to and jotted down notes, but her mind kept drifting back to Lucas. Why was he here? Why was he so comfortable in her father’s world when she had never been? And more importantly, why had her father trusted him? As the meeting drew to a close, the board members filed out one by one, leaving only Sera and Lucas in the room. The silence between them was palpable, charged with unresolved emotions. Lucas stood, adjusting his suit jacket. “Sera, we need to talk.” She flinched at the sound of her name on his lips. It had been years since she had heard him say it, and it brought back memories she had tried to bury. Memories of that one night when everything had felt perfect, only to fall apart the next morning.“About what?” she asked, her voice tight. He took a step closer, his expression unreadable. “About your father. There’s more going on here than you realize.” Her heart skipped a beat. “What do you mean?” Lucas hesitated for a moment, his jaw tightening. “Your father wasn’t just a businessman. He had… connections. Some of them dangerous. And now that you’re in charge, those connections are going to come after you.”Sera’s blood ran cold. “Dangerous? What are you talking about?” “I’m saying you’re not safe, Sera. There are people who don’t want you to inherit this company. And now that you have, they’ll do whatever it takes to make sure you’re out of the picture.” Her pulse quickened, fear prickling at the edges of her mind. She had never been involved in her father’s business, never understood the extent of his power. But the look in Lucas’s eyes told her that this wasn’t just a corporate rivalry. It was something far more sinister.“I don’t understand,” Sera whispered. “Why would anyone want to hurt me?” Lucas’s gaze softened, and for the first time since he walked into the room, she saw a flicker of the man she had once known. “Because they know you’re the only one who can uncover the truth about your father’s dealings. And they’ll do whatever it takes to keep that truth buried.”
