"I am not letting you walk out that door, Elara."
The words didn't echo. They dropped into the freezing air of the office like a heavy iron vault slamming shut.
I backed away, my bare feet sliding blindly across the Persian rug. I clutched his car keys so tightly the jagged metal edges sliced into the soft meat of my palm, the sharp sting of pain the only thing keeping me tethered to consciousness.
I was mentally screaming, my brain going into fight or flight mode. My adrenaline was spiking to toxic levels, flooding my bloodstream, narrowing my vision to a dark, terrifying tunnel that ended entirely on the massive silhouette blocking the exit.
Julian didn't raise his voice. He didn't pull a weapon. He didn't even take a threatening stance. He simply stood in the doorway, an immovable wall of muscle and bespoke clothing, radiating a dark, suffocating emotional dominance that completely consumed the oxygen in the room.
"Get out of my way," I commanded. My voice shook violently, betraying every ounce of the terror I was trying to mask.
"No."
Julian took a single, measured step forward into the office.
I scrambled backward, putting the heavy mahogany desk between us. "You killed Vance. You lied to me. You kept me locked in this tower while Liam—"
"Liam is a ghost, Elara," Julian interrupted, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that shook the floorboards beneath my feet. "The boy you loved never existed. He was a mask Liam wore to keep you compliant. The thing on the other end of that phone is a sociopath trying to drag you into the grave with him, and I will be damned if I let him take you."
"He's trying to save me from you!" I screamed, the tears finally spilling over my lashes, hot and blinding.
"He is trying to use you to execute me!" Julian roared back, his stoic composure finally snapping completely.
The sheer force of his voice hit me like a physical blow. Julian never yelled. He was the silent, lethal enforcer who moved in the shadows. Seeing him lose control, seeing the raw, violent desperation burning in his dark eyes, terrified me more than the cold-blooded killer Liam had described.
"Well, you're nothing to me!! You're a lying piece of s**t who would kill his own brother, his flesh and blood, for power. I can't believe I almost trusted you. You tried to kill Liam and then you did Vance...and...and now...I—I..."
"Look at me Elara,"Julian pleaded, his chest heaving as he took another step toward the desk. He raised his large hands, palms open, entirely exposing himself to me. "I could have silenced you a hundred times, Elara. I could have snapped your neck in the maze. I could have let Roman’s cleaners sweep you under the rug. But you are standing here. You are breathing. I have bled for three months to keep you breathing."
"You're manipulating me," I sobbed, shaking my head frantically. Liam’s voice crawled like a parasite through my skull.
He’s calculating, Elara. He’s figuring out how long it will take to silence you.
I hit the edge of the mahogany desk. There was nowhere left to retreat.
My left hand blindly fumbled behind my back, dragging across the polished wood. I needed an equalizer. I needed something to stop the apex predator from crossing the final five feet between us.
My fingers caught the brass handle of the top right drawer.
I didn't know what I was looking for. A letter opener. A heavy paperweight. But this was the private office of the syndicate's most lethal weapon.
I pulled the drawer open.
My fingers brushed against cold, heavy, unyielding steel.
The shape was unmistakable. My medical training had forced me to memorize the ballistic entry wounds these things caused. I had dug hollow-point fragments out of shattered collarbones in the trauma ward. I knew exactly what it was.
I grabbed the silver handgun, my fingers awkwardly wrapping around the textured grip. It was terrifyingly heavy, a dense block of engineered death.
I whipped my hand out from behind my back and leveled the barrel directly at Julian’s chest.
"Stop right there!" I screamed, my voice tearing my throat.
Julian froze.
The silence that followed was absolute and deafening. The faint silver moonlight spilling through the penthouse windows caught the polished barrel of the gun, illuminating the violent tremor in my hands. I held it with both hands, exactly like I had seen police officers do when they brought gunshot victims into the ER.
Julian didn't dive for cover. He didn't raise his hands. He didn't even look at the weapon.
His dark, unblinking eyes stayed locked entirely on my face.
"Elara," he whispered, his despair filling the air.
"Give me the code to the elevator," I demanded, choking on a sob. My finger slipped over the trigger guard. The metal was freezing. "Give me the code, Julian, or I swear to God I will shoot you."
I knew exactly where to aim. Center mass. Right between the second and third ribs. It would puncture a lung, maybe clip the ascending aorta. If he moved fast enough to attack me, he would bleed out before he crossed the desk.
Julian looked at the gun, and then he looked back at my tear-streaked face.
The muscle in his jaw feathered. The desperate, pleading lover vanished. What replaced it was a look of absolute, terrifying devotion. A man completely surrendering his life to the woman holding his death.
He took a step forward.
"Stop!" I shrieked, my finger tightening on the trigger.
He didn't stop.
Julian walked slowly, deliberately, around the edge of the mahogany desk. He didn't try to disarm me. He didn't try to grab my wrists. He walked straight into my space, his broad chest advancing until the silver tip of the barrel pressed flush against the black fabric of his dress shirt.
Directly over his heart.
I gasped, my entire body locking up in sheer horror. I tried to pull the gun back, terrified it would accidentally discharge, but my back was already pressed flat against the bookshelves.
I could feel the heavy, erratic thud of his heartbeat traveling straight down the metal barrel and into my shaking hands. It was beating so fast. He wasn't entirely fearless; he was just entirely willing to die for this.
Julian reached up.
He didn't push the gun away. His large, calloused hand wrapped gently over my trembling fingers, holding the weapon firmly against his own chest to ensure I didn't drop it. The heat of his skin against my freezing hands was agonizing.
He leaned down, his face hovering mere inches from mine. The intoxicating scent of dark cedar, scotch, and raw danger wrapped around me, completely suffocating my panic.
His dark eyes stripped away every layer of my defenses, leaving me completely naked and ruined beneath his stare.
"Pull the trigger, Elara," Julian whispered, his voice a dark, velvet vow that shattered my soul. "It’s safer than going back to him."
