Chapter 3

A searing pain instantly spread across my face, and I was knocked sideways, my ears ringing. Around me, a chorus of sharp gasps rose from the crowd. Holding my face, I forced back tears and straightened up. I said, "Ivo, you are truly disgusting." "Disgusting?" Ivo went completely mad. He spat, "I'll show you what real disgusting means today!" He walked over to Margot, who had just struggled to sit up, snatched the broken glasses frame from her hand, and threw it on the ground, stomping on it until it shattered. He snarled, "Old hag, you ruined my fun!" Margot lost her only support, swayed, and fell to the ground again. She tried to grab back her belongings, but Ivo kicked her square in the chest. Margot coughed up a mouthful of blood, and her face turned ashen in an instant. She curled up on the ground, clutching her chest with both hands, her body trembling violently. A wave of exclamations rose from the tourists around them. "That's too brutal..." "Someone's going to get killed. Call the police!" But for all the talk, no one dared to step forward. Daphne also turned pale with fear. She took a step back and hid behind Ivo. She whispered, "Ivo, let's go. This old woman is definitely going to sue us..." I shouted at him, "Ivo, are you insane? She's old!" Ivo sneered, "An old hag like that dares to act tough with me? I think she's just pretending. Today I'll let her pretend to her heart's content!" No sooner had he spoken than he raised his foot and stomped hard on Margot's already injured leg. A cracking sound echoed, the unmistakable noise of bone breaking. A shrill scream tore through the air as Margot's pant leg was rapidly stained red by the gushing blood. Daphne was so frightened that she burst into tears. She cried, "Ivo, stop... stop hitting her..." Ivo squatted down, grabbed Margot by the hair, and yanked her head up. He growled, "Keep pretending. Go on, keep pretending. Today, I'll let you know what happens to people who cross me, Ivo!" Margot spat out a mouthful of blood and glared at him unflinchingly. She said, "Young man, you'll regret this... Didn't your family ever teach you that there are some people you can't afford to offend?" "Regret?" Ivo threw his head back and laughed wildly. He boasted, "I, Ivo, have never known how to spell the word 'regret' in my entire life." He raised his foot and stomped down hard on Margot's calf again. Margot let out a muffled groan, her entire body curling into a ball on the ground. Ivo turned to the onlookers and said, "I'm so scared. Look at that, this old hag still wants to threaten me." A few young onlookers who were enjoying the spectacle joined in with jeers and laughter. He stood up and kicked Margot in the waist once more. I stood not far away, my nails digging deep into my palms. 'Don't get involved, Wren. You absolutely must not stick your nose in other people's business again,' I warned myself over and over.
