31 The Wounded Nightdweller Petra and Amlinn struggled along the ravine, Amlinn white-faced and limping, gasping with pain. The ravine grew shallower as they travelled, but never enough to allow Amlinn to climb out. Minute by minute, the sunlight on the ravine’s eastern wall shrank away, until at last, only a thin bright outline of fire touched the tops of the trees high above. Then it vanished. In the deepening twilight, Petra stopped and looked around. “We have to find shelter.” “There isn’t any,” Amlinn said, her voice trembling. “You can’t hide from Nightdwellers. They always know where Daydwellers are. It’s one of Ell’s Gifts. They’ll find us. And then they’ll kill us.” Petra stared at her. He’d never heard her sound so vulnerable.
