30 Death in the Night From the deep shadow of the woods, Jin watched soldiers and waggoneers circulating through the camp sprawled around the great, hulking shape of the sunscale-roofed wagon they called Liberator. They thought themselves safe, those firelance-armed soldiers. Safe inside a heavily patrolled perimeter, safe inside the circle of radiance cast by the sparkglobes on each corner of Liberator. They were about to find out how wrong they were. Ordinarily, an attack into that brilliant light would have been futile, the light blinding the Nightdwellers and eliminating much of the advantage given by the watchbelts. But the same smoked-glass goggles that had protected the Nightdweller force from the sun on their ride to the King’s Way protected them from the glare of the sparkglob
