Jin’s breath caught in his throat.
“Citydwellers and Freefolk travelled the night freely, guided by Nightdwellers,” Ser Mar went on. “Villages sprang up two, three, even four days’ travel from the Twelve Cities. There was even talk of building new settlements outside the valley, since the only threats Daydwellers faced in the night were wild animals. Their Nightdweller guides kept them safe.
“Why, then, do we hunt Daydwellers in the night and claim Ell commanded us to do so? Why do Daydwellers hide behind walled cities and Freefolk behind Fences? Why are two-score or more people of Nevyana slain every year, on both sides?”
Ser Mar stopped and peered at Jin as if expecting an answer. Jin didn’t have one. “I don’t know, Master.”
