13 Jin’s Farewell An hour after he’d left Ser Mar’s small, smoky chamber, Jin left the much larger and better-ventilated chamber of Nix-Pur, Governor of Broken Tree Warren. He clutched his written permission to leave Broken Tree for the Great Warren, where he would enrol in the Scrollkeeper Seminary. “Bit underage, aren’t you, Jin-Ra?” Governor Nix-Pur had boomed as he’d read Ser Mar’s note. “Ser Mar feels I have advanced as far as I can here,” Jin said, “and the Seminary is always short of—” But the Governor had already scrawled his signature across the bottom of the letter and turned his gaze to the next supplicant, a frightened-looking young female with slate-grey fur.
