21 The Doll Jin set out again the moment the sun slipped below the horizon, and for a second night, he found the Freefolk camp far sooner than he had expected. It sprawled across a small clearing, really nothing more than a wide spot in the path. The Fence glimmered in place, but the wagons inside it had been pulled up into a haphazard jumble, very different from their usual organization. Worse, large boulders and tall trees stood dangerously close by. Jin’s former watchpack would have been over the Fence and inside the camp slaughtering Freefolk in moments. Freefolk were safe enough from watchpacks this far north, but there was no way for them to know that. What happened to make them so careless? Jin crept closer.
