Where have you been?” The change in her tone was audible, and it made my jaw tickle with irritation. The concern in her voice was forced, though. Sydney wasn’t about to let his little brother fall for it, as their eyes met he immediately shook his head, signaling an underlying warning. “Come inside,” Rina said, eyeing the two boys before turning around and heading in first. "Wait out with the driver." I instructed Mona before heading in. Percy and I waited in the foyer while the boys went ahead with their mother to have a family talk, their final talk. She brought us coffee, but Percy and I knew better than to drink it. After what seemed like an eternity, I had lost track of time since I wasn’t wearing my pocket watch, I turned to Percy. “It’s been over an hour now.” He uttered as if reading my mind. “How long will that chitchat last?” I glanced down the hallway. “Let’s give them the moment.” I didn’t listen to Percy. Upon reaching the dining room, the first thing that hurt my eyes was the sight of Syd and Alan bound in ropes to their chairs, mouths taped shut. That was the moment a bat went for my head, sending me falling as I held the spot. Seeing my own blood, a vein thickened on my face and my fists clenched, ready— another hit to the head sent me into a delirium. My eyelids weakened until they shut completely. The ringing alarm in my ears overpowered the muffled groans of the children. In this state of darkness... This confusion, it was all too nostalgic. My mind wandered through different memories until one stood out enough to immerse me. But why this one and why now? “But I don’t want to go down there. It's scary” My little voice from decades ago came to life. “Eve, show us how brave you are!” said the figure standing next to me. “But I am not brave.” “You’re a liar… Keaton is a liar too for calling you brave.” “My daddy is not a liar,” i retorted, looking into the empty well. “He said you’re capable of anything… but you can’t even jump into this? I did it and I came out alive. I’m the brave one, you're just daddy's little weakling!” another voice pitched into my ears. "I'm not weak... I.. I— " I peeped into the well "it's really scary... please don't make me do this." "Eve stop crying, okay? don't worry, we'll pull you back up if you go down." "promise?" "We promise!!" Their voices chorused The mind have a funny way of blurring out faces. All I remembered was the tone of their voices, theirs words and the moment the girl— I jumped into the well. Their mocking giggles didn’t just echo throughout the well, they echoed in my head, my mind, my soul, e.v.e.r.ywhere... They failed me. They lied to me. They promised me. Me! Me! Me! They should have pulled me up. They should have called me brave! They're my friends! They betrayed me? They betrayed me. Another strike went to my head. It would have knocked me out for sure, but instead it hardened my resolve. I was now wide awake from the darkness. Enough is enough. I rolled face-up, facing the beam of light above, coming from a chandelier. As my vision cleared, a silhouette came between that beam of light, darkening my vision again… darkening... No. No. No. No DARKNESS. No. Not again! “You’re not dead yet?” Said Rina as she raised her arm, ready to hit me with the bat again. I rolled over, missing the strike narrowly, and grabbed her leg simultaneously, twisting and dragging it until she fell. I had a second and I held my aching head. There was a time I would have paused to recollect my senses and stabilize… but this wasn’t that moment. The adrenaline rush was at its peak. Darkness....... dark-ness I see… I see itttt… Dark. I see blood…Nooo I— I-I can’t see anything… Somethin inky is eating away my sight. I need… I need to stay. I need to be— I have to be I. am. brave. I straddled Rina with my thighs, hands on her throat. I throttled her without reluctance, this wasn't my usual style of taking a life, but now... seeing the panick, that desperation to hold on... to cling to every breathe longer. I still didn’t let go. I wanted more… but how when she had already choked up her last breath after a three minute struggle. Percy: "Eve, what have you done" I wasn't satisfied still. I wanted to be blessed with this opportunity to send a soul to God... Percy: "Eve" “Wake up!!” I yelled in a frenzy, leaning into her face. Her eyes were bulging as if they’d pop, and her lips were parted… I could see it now. The black was gone... The ink is gone... I can see now... She's dead, I granted her death...I— I froze as hands descended on my shoulders. Sydney: “You killed our mother.”
