Anna stood like a statue in front of the huge building.
She had been trying to convince her feet to move and enter the place for the past thirty minutes, but her feet were not agreeing. Obviously, her body parts were exhibiting more common sense than her today.
She had woken up dreading how the interview would go. She had almost given up but convinced herself to give the interview a chance. After all, what's the worst that could happen? Anna thought. She could only be seriously humiliated and afterwards thrown out like a dog.
She almost wanted to cry again. Why were these things happening to her? Did she offend someone? Was it karma? But she really thought she had been a decent person in her life.
It was almost 9 am, Anna thought. If they didn't throw her out for her ill-fated relationship with Adrian, maybe they would kick her out for being tardy. But she had arrived as early as 7:40 am; all that was left now was to convince her feet to enter the building.
"Come on, Anna, you can't give up like this," she said to herself. She needed to at least give it a try.
She tried to move forward, but another thought stopped her. Adrian's personal secretary? Could she survive that?
It was either that or life on the street. She would endure Adrian any day if things could just work out in her favor today.
Anna straightened up and dusted her black pants and ironed blue shirt. It was nice and clean; she had gotten it in a rush for her interview this morning out of the little money she had left. She really needed the job.
She walked in, her long hair which she had pulled into a ponytail bouncing behind her. She approached the receptionist.
"Good morning. My name is Anna Reign. I'm here for the interview," she said politely.
"Welcome, Miss Reign. You can just take the elevator to your left and get off at the 5th floor. That's where the interview will be held," the receptionist replied, smiling at Anna and pointing out the direction of the elevator.
"Thank you very much," Anna replied, smiling back.
She walked towards the elevator and got in with everyone else, her heartbeat sounding loudly in her ears. The elevator dinged and opened at the 5th floor, and Anna got out.
She could see some people already seated with interview tags on their necks. She walked towards the interview coordinator and got her own tag. She took her seat beside some other ladies.
They were having a conversation, and Anna could hear them speaking.
"I heard the CEO is so handsome. I really hope I get hired; just seeing his face every day will be worth it," the first woman said.
"You're so right about that. I wonder who's interviewing us? I don't think it'll be the CEO, though. He is extremely busy; I think one of the senior staff will interview us," the second woman said.
Anna's heart leaped for joy. This was great; at least if she wasn't accepted, they would let her leave gracefully. She was sure Adrian would want to humiliate her before sending her away.
The memory of her last time with Adrian crossed her mind. She had decided not to reply to him because she didn't want a confrontation. He would soon marry Felicia, and it was best they were at least polite to each other.
Anna watched as the woman who was speaking beside her was called in.
The woman straightened her dress and walked gracefully into the office. As she walked in, she was met with a man who was looking at her resume.
Adrian looked at the woman who had entered and immediately knew she wouldn't do. This one looked dressed to seduce. What did they think he did with his secretary? At least five of the women he had interviewed today were dressed in a similar manner.
"Good morning, sir. My name is Felicity Jones," she said, smiling seductively, her eyes tracing his face.
Adrian looked at her coldly and made his decision. "Get out," he said without a hint of emotion.
The woman was obviously shocked as the smile fell off her face. "Wait, what?" she asked, surprised.
Adrian placed his hand on his forehead, already tired from the previous interviews. He really didn't want to waste more time. "Are you dumb? I said get out," Adrian repeated.
The lady looked as if she was about to cry as she rushed out of the office.
Adrian picked up the next resume, and his eyes widened as his heart leaped up with excitement. Why the hell was Anna's resume here? And why was he so excited? He couldn't remember the last time he felt like this.
He frowned and shook the feeling away. Anna looking for a job in his company—this would be fun. He remembered that she was top of their class while they were in college; he knew she was qualified, even for more than a secretary position.
He heard the door open and someone come in. Without looking up, Adrian could feel her presence.
Anna was beyond shocked to see Adrian in front of her. She stared at the man seated in front of her as he went through her resume. She silently took her seat, holding tightly to her purse. She was doing her best to sit still and not bolt out the door. Why was this happening to her?
She thought she would be interviewed by senior staff. She thought lightning didn't strike the same place twice? This was the thousandth time.
"So why do you think I should hire you, Miss Reign?" Adrian asked, going straight to the point. "Because you are my ex? Or do you actually think you are qualified enough for this job?" he asked with a mocking grin on his face.
Bastard! Anna thought as she glared at him venomously. To think she had once been willing to die for this man.
"If you don't think I'm QUALIFIED enough to be your assistant, sir, then please return my files and let me be on my way," she said, standing up from the chair. It was better she leave before she was thrown out.
As she tried to pick up her resume and leave, Adrian grabbed her hand and suddenly pulled her to the wall, trapping her with his body.
Anna was shocked. How did he pull her from there to here?
"You still smell so good," he said drowsily as he sniffed her hair and traced his lips on her neck.
Anna froze as her heartbeat skyrocketed. What was he doing? Was he drunk? Could the heart beat that fast? Was she about to die?
He suddenly moved away and dusted his clothes, walking away from her. "You're hired. 8 am tomorrow. Do not be late."
Anna just stared as the man left the office. What had she gotten herself into?
