Unfortunately, neither my dreams of the Roadshow nor my hopes that this wasn’t a human body were panning out. Santiago had quickly determined that, as best he could tell, I had found a human femur. So we were sitting around waiting for the coroner to arrive so that she could extract the rest of the remains. Jackie had invited us to wait inside with her, but none of us had been much in the mood for polite conversation. So Santi and I had taken the huge, ice-filled glasses of Pepsi she’d offered and gone to sprawl in the grass while we waited, nestling the glasses into taller tufts of grass so they wouldn’t tip over.
