When I pulled up in front of Santi’s house, he was waiting for me on the front lawn. His knees were dirty like he’d been weeding away for quite a while, and the grin on his face told me he was in his happy place. But when I climbed out of the car and he took a wide step to the right, revealing a big “Sold” placard on top of a real estate sign that hadn’t been there a week ago, I understood this joy was about more than just pulling weeds. “You sold your house?” I said. “I did. We’d talked about it, and I wanted to surprise you.” He leaned over and kissed me after my slightly fazed walk to him. “Sawyer helped me finalize everything during our dinner date the other night.
