CHAPTER THREE - MORNING IN THE LION’S DEN

685 Words
The first rays of dawn crept through the velvet curtains, gilding the Pierre mansion in soft light. Kimberly stirred beneath silk sheets, the weight of last night pressing against her chest like an immovable stone. Her body was stiff, her eyes swollen from silent tears. She turned slightly, half-expecting to find Jake beside her. But the other side of the bed was untouched, the pillows still perfectly arranged. A strange relief washed over her. He hadn’t claimed her, hadn’t forced himself. But that relief was quickly replaced by something sharper: the reminder that his mercy wasn’t hers. It had been his decision. She sat up slowly, clutching the sheets to her chest. A knock at the door startled her. “Come in,” Jake’s deep voice commanded from somewhere beyond the door. The doors swung open, and two women entered — one middle-aged, dressed in crisp gray, the other younger, her hair neatly pinned back. They carried trays of polished silver and steaming food. “Good morning, Mrs. Pierre,” the older woman said with a polite bow. “I’m Martha, head of household staff. This is Elise. We’re here to serve you breakfast.” Mrs. Pierre. The title sat on Kimberly’s shoulders like chains. “Um—thank you,” she murmured, unsure what else to say. They set the trays on the small dining table near the window — eggs, fresh bread, fruit glistening with dew. The scents were warm, inviting, but Kimberly’s stomach was tight, unwilling. Jake entered a moment later, freshly dressed in a dark tailored suit. His hair was damp from a shower, his cufflinks gleaming. He looked every bit the cold, untouchable man she had married. “Eat,” he said simply, taking his place at the table. Kimberly hesitated, then slipped from the bed, clutching the robe Martha had laid out for her. As she sat opposite Jake, she couldn’t help but notice the way Elise’s eyes darted curiously between them. “Don’t stare,” Jake said without looking up, his knife cutting cleanly into a slice of bread. Elise flushed crimson and lowered her gaze immediately. Kimberly blinked. Even with just a few words, his authority silenced the room. The staff served quietly, their movements efficient, disciplined. Kimberly realized this wasn’t just a household — it was a kingdom. Every servant, every gesture, was trained to orbit the Pierre family like planets around a sun. She picked up her fork, hands trembling slightly. The silence stretched until Martha spoke, her tone softer than Kimberly expected. “If there’s anything you need, Mrs. Pierre, you have only to ask. The mansion can feel… overwhelming at first.” Her words carried a kindness Kimberly hadn’t anticipated. She offered a small, grateful smile. “Thank you, Martha.” Jake’s eyes flicked toward her, sharp, unreadable. Kimberly quickly focused on her plate. When breakfast ended, Jake rose, sliding his chair back with measured control. “You’ll meet my mother today,” he said. “She’ll want to see you.” Kimberly froze. His mother. The matriarch of the Pierre family. What if she was like Charles Moore? What if she despised her, the daughter sold like cattle into this marriage? As if reading her thoughts, Jake’s gaze softened — barely, but enough for her to notice. “She won’t hurt you.” Her lips parted in surprise, but before she could respond, he turned and left, the door closing behind him like a final word. Martha approached, her expression kind. “Would you like me to prepare you for the meeting, Mrs. Pierre? A dress perhaps?” Kimberly swallowed hard, fingers curling around her robe. She wasn’t ready for any of this. She wasn’t ready to play the role of wife, daughter-in-law, pawn in a family empire. But there was no way out. “Yes,” she said quietly. “Please.” As the women moved to prepare her, Kimberly glanced at the door Jake had exited through. His presence lingered like smoke, suffocating and unshakable. Her new life had only just begun. And already, the lion’s den was closing in.
