  LAURA   It was my third day at my mother's house and she hadn't smoked a single thing. She'd probably decided that she didn't want to add any more to my suffering.   Maybe she was abstaining simply because I was here, and for all the world, she could go back to smoking soon as I left. I'd take it. A win is a win.   Speak of the devil.
