Chapter 16 – Scouting for a Christmas TreeElizabeth’s dad volunteered to take us to Sugar Island so we could scout out Christmas trees. I told him we had plenty on my reservation, but he wouldn’t listen. Even when Elizabeth said there were lots of trees on the sideroad, he still said the best ones were on the Island. I spent the night at Blew’s house so Mr. Clout wouldn’t have to drive to Bay Mills where I live. All the kids piled into the back of his pickup truck. Now we’re in the Soo, waiting at the Sugar Island ferry dock.
“Larry, how do we get across the river?” Daisy asks me.
“The ferry will be here soon,” I say. “Look over there. All the cars going to the Island just got off. Now the ferry will come back to this side and pick us up.”
