Chapter 24 – Shirley Waits with BelleToday is Saturday and I’ve been at the barn for hours. I’m waiting for Belle to freshen. She’s my favorite cow, and I feel sorry for her because she always has deformed calves. Every year we hope she’ll have a normal calf, but when the baby comes out there’s something missing or too much of something else and Pap has to shoot it.
My arm’s getting tired so I put down the curry comb and sit on a bale of hay. Fuzzy jumps on my lap and starts purring. She has five new kittens. I hope we get to keep all of them. Their eyes are still closed and they look like baby rats, although I’ve never seen a baby rat. The kittens sleep in a pile and cry when they want Fuzzy.
