Chapter 14: A Turn of Events

490 Words
Ava's second date with Ethan was going much better than the first. They were at a cozy Italian restaurant, and Ethan was making her laugh with his jokes and stories. She was surprised by how much she was enjoying his company. "I have to say, Ethan, I really like your sense of humor," Ava said, smiling at him across the table. "Thanks, Ava," Ethan replied, grinning back at her. "I try to make people laugh. Life's too short to be serious all the time." As they finished their meal and prepared to leave, Ava felt a sense of disappointment. She didn't want the evening to end. As Ethan drove home, he noticed a car following him. At first, he thought nothing of it, but as the car continued to tail him, he started to feel uneasy. He sped up, trying to lose the car, but it kept pace with him. Ethan's heart raced as he realized he was being followed. Suddenly, the car swerved into his lane, trying to cut him off. Ethan swerved to avoid it, but it was too late. The car collided with his, causing a loud crash. Ethan's car spun out of control, hitting a lamp post before coming to a stop. Ethan's world went dark as he lost consciousness. Ava was at home when she received a phone call from the hospital. "Miss Ava, we have some bad news. Ethan has been in an accident. He's in critical condition." Ava's heart sank. She felt like she had been punched in the gut. She quickly got dressed and rushed to the hospital, her mind racing with thoughts of Ethan. When she arrived at the hospital, she was greeted by a somber-looking doctor. "Miss Ava, I'm afraid Ethan's injuries are very severe. He's suffered a head trauma and internal bleeding. We're doing everything we can to save him, but it's not looking good." Ava felt a wave of fear wash over her. She couldn't lose Ethan now, not when she was just starting to get to know him. She prayed for a miracle, hoping that he would pull through. As she waited anxiously in the waiting room, she couldn't help but think about their last conversation. They had talked about their future, and Ethan had mentioned wanting to take her on a trip to Europe. Now, she wondered if that would ever happen. The hours ticked by slowly, and Ava's anxiety grew. Finally, the doctor came out to update her on Ethan's condition. "We've managed to stabilize him, but he's still in critical condition. We'll need to monitor him closely for the next 24 hours to see if he'll make it through." Ava nodded, trying to hold back tears. She knew she had to be strong for Ethan, even if he couldn't hear her. She sat down in the waiting room, her eyes fixed on the door to the ICU, willing Ethan to fight for his life.
