Chapter 12: A Suggestion

637 Words
The Brooks family was gathered around the dinner table, enjoying a delicious meal prepared by their chef. James Brooks, the patriarch, looked around at his family with a satisfied smile. "I have an idea," he said, his voice booming through the room. "Ethan, my boy, you're getting married to Ava in a few weeks. And Emily, your sister, is already married to Jack. I think it's time we started building some bridges between our families." Ethan nodded, his mind racing with thoughts of the upcoming wedding. He hadn't been thrilled about the arrangement, but he knew it was necessary for the business. "Yes, Father," he said, his voice neutral. "I think it would be a good idea for you and Ava to get to know each other better before the wedding," James continued. "Maybe go on a date or two, get a feel for each other's company." Ethan's sister, Emily, spoke up from across the table. "That's a great idea, Father. Jack and I can give you some advice on how to make it work." Jack, her husband, nodded in agreement. "We've been through it, Ethan. We know how to make a arranged marriage work." Ethan nodded, feeling a sense of resignation wash over him. He knew this was all part of the plan, but he couldn't help feeling trapped. After dinner, James excused himself and made a phone call to Antonio Garcia, Ava's father. "Antonio, my old friend, I think it's time our children started getting to know each other. Can you arrange a date for Ethan and Ava to meet up this evening?" Antonio agreed, and James hung up the phone, feeling satisfied with himself. Meanwhile, Ava was at home, getting ready for the evening's events. Her father had called her earlier, telling her about the dinner date with Ethan. She was nervous but also curious. What would Ethan be like? Would they hit it off? When Ethan arrived at the grand restaurant, Ava was already there, sipping a glass of wine. He was taken aback by her beauty, her long dark hair and piercing green eyes. She smiled at him, and he felt a flutter in his chest. As they sat down at their table, the conversation was stilted at first. But as they ordered their food and started eating, they began to open up to each other. They talked about their families, their interests, and their hopes for the future. As they sipped their coffee, Ava spoke up, her voice barely above a whisper. "Ethan, do you think...do you think we'll fall in love one day?" Ethan felt a pang of surprise. He hadn't expected her to be so direct. "Yes, Ava," he said, his voice honest. "I do. I hope that we can find happiness together, despite the circumstances of our marriage." Ava nodded, a small smile on her face. "I hope so too, Ethan. I really do." The conversation died after that, both of them feeling a little awkward. But as they prepared to leave, Ethan spoke up. "Ava, can I get your number? We should...um...coordinate our schedules, I suppose." Ava nodded, her cheeks flushing. "Of course, Ethan. Here, let me give it to you." They exchanged numbers, the act feeling like a symbol of their impending marriage. As they parted ways, Ethan couldn't help but feel a sense of trepidation. What did the future hold for them? Only time would tell. The rest of the evening was a blur for Ethan. He couldn't stop thinking about Ava, her beauty and her grace. He felt a sense of hope that he hadn't felt in a long time. Maybe this arranged marriage wouldn't be so bad after all. As he drove home, he couldn't help but wonder what the future held for them. Would they find happiness together? Only time would tell.
