Chapter Three: The Hunter and the Hunted The first thing Aria heard when she woke up was a growl. Low. Dangerous. Close. Her eyes flew open. Sunlight filtered through the broken windows of the abandoned cabin, but the warmth did nothing to calm the fear rushing through her body. The growl came again. Outside. Aria immediately pushed herself to her feet. Her muscles ached from sleeping on the wooden floor. Every part of her body reminded her of the nightmare her life had become. For a brief moment, she almost forgot. Then reality returned. Kael's rejection. Her exile. The mysterious power that had exploded from her body. And the Alpha King searching for her. Aria swallowed hard. The growl sounded again. This time followed by voices. Male voices. "She has to be close." "Search every building." "Alpha Kael wants her found." Aria froze. Shadow Moon warriors. They had found her. Panic rushed through her chest. Less than twenty-four hours ago, Kael had publicly rejected her. Now he was sending wolves after her. Why? If he wanted her gone, why was he searching for her? Nothing made sense anymore. The cabin door creaked. Someone was outside. Aria's pulse thundered in her ears. She needed to move. Now. Quietly, she slipped toward the back window. The old wooden frame barely held together. Perfect. Taking a deep breath, she climbed through. The moment her feet touched the ground, she ran. Branches slapped against her arms as she disappeared deeper into the forest. Behind her, a shout erupted. "She's here!" Damn it. The warriors had seen her. Aria ran faster. The sounds of pursuit exploded behind her. Footsteps. Growls. Breaking branches. They were gaining ground. Of course they were. They were trained warriors. She was exhausted. Hungry. Heartbroken. A terrible combination. "Stop running, Aria!" The familiar voice made her stomach twist. She knew that voice. Derek. One of Kael's trusted enforcers. "Leave me alone!" she shouted. "No can do!" The sound of paws hitting the ground echoed behind her. They were shifting. That made things worse. Much worse. Aria pushed herself harder. Her lungs burned. Her vision blurred. But she couldn't stop. If they caught her, she had no idea what would happen next. Another howl echoed through the trees. Then another. More wolves. The hunt was growing. Suddenly a massive gray wolf burst from the bushes ahead. Aria skidded to a halt. Her heart dropped. Another wolf appeared behind her. Then another. Three wolves. Blocking every escape route. The warriors slowly shifted back into human form. Derek stepped forward. His expression wasn't cruel. Which somehow made everything worse. "Come back with us." Aria laughed bitterly. "Back where?" "The pack." "The pack that threw me away?" Derek looked uncomfortable. "Things are complicated." "No." Aria shook her head. "They're actually very simple." Pain flashed across her face. "Kael rejected me." Silence followed. None of the warriors could deny it. Because they had all witnessed it. Derek sighed. "The Alpha wants to speak with you." Aria's eyes hardened. "I have nothing to say to him." A flicker of frustration crossed Derek's face. "Aria—" "No." Her voice cracked. But she didn't care. "He made his choice." The forest fell silent. Even the birds seemed to stop singing. Then something unexpected happened. Derek looked guilty. Actually guilty. As if there was something he wanted to say. Something he couldn't. Before Aria could question him, another voice echoed through the trees. Cold. Powerful. Dangerous. "I suggest you step away from her." Every warrior froze. Fear immediately appeared in their eyes. Aria slowly turned. A black SUV stood at the edge of the forest. She hadn't even heard it arrive. The driver's door opened first. A tall man stepped out. Dark hair. Sharp features. Confident smile. The stranger from the previous night. The same man who had been with Dante. Then the rear door opened. And the forest seemed to hold its breath. Dante Ravencrest stepped out. Silence exploded through the clearing. Even the wolves instinctively lowered their heads. The Alpha King's presence was overwhelming. His black coat moved slightly in the wind as silver-black eyes swept across the gathering. Nobody spoke. Nobody moved. Aria suddenly understood why people feared him. It wasn't because he shouted. It wasn't because he threatened. It was because he didn't need to. Power surrounded him naturally. Like breathing. Derek swallowed visibly. "Alpha King." Dante ignored him. His gaze settled entirely on Aria. For a moment, neither spoke. Something strange passed between them. Recognition. Curiosity. Awareness. Then Dante's eyes narrowed slightly. "You look terrible." Aria blinked. Of all the things he could have said— That wasn't what she expected. "What?" The stranger snorted. Dante remained serious. "You need food." Aria stared. Then, despite everything, despite the fear and confusion and heartbreak— She laughed. A real laugh. Small. Brief. But real. The sound surprised everyone. Including herself. Something softened in Dante's gaze. Only slightly. Gone almost instantly. But Aria noticed. Derek stepped forward. "My King, with respect, the girl belongs to Shadow Moon." The temperature seemed to drop. Danger filled the clearing. Dante slowly turned toward him. The look alone was enough to make several warriors step back. "Belongs?" His voice was dangerously calm. Nobody answered. Dante's gaze returned to Aria. Then he asked a simple question. One that changed everything. "Do you wish to go with them?" Aria looked at the Shadow Moon warriors. The wolves who watched her humiliation. The pack that abandoned her. The people who remained silent when her life fell apart. Then she looked at Dante. The mysterious Alpha King. The dangerous stranger. The unknown future. Neither option felt safe. But only one felt like a choice. Slowly, Aria shook her head. "No." Silence followed. Derek cursed under his breath. Dante nodded once. Decision made. "Then she stays." The warriors exchanged nervous looks. "My King," Derek said carefully, "Alpha Kael will not like this." For the first time, something resembling amusement appeared in Dante's eyes. "I wasn't asking for his permission." The forest fell completely silent. Because everyone understood exactly what those words meant. A challenge had just been issued. And somewhere far away, Alpha Kael Romanov was about to discover that the woman he rejected had just gained the protection of the most powerful Alpha in the werewolf world. To Be Continued...
