Alaric woke suddenly, his heart racing and his head a jumble of memories, visions, and his father"s voice. He sat in the dark, listening for something to tell him what had woken him. The cabin was still and quiet. His mother shifted in her sleep in the next room, and Riley was restless in the bedroom downstairs. He wiped his sweaty face and got out of bed, padding to the window on bare feet. The night sky was clear and a sliver of moon shined down on the valley. It seemed peaceful. He knew it was anything but peaceful. He pulled on his pants and rummaged in his bag for a shirt to pull on as he left the room.
