On My Own

1216 Words
The weeks went quickly when I left the pack. I was not so nicely escorted by a couple pack warriors after they shoved random mismatched clothes into a bag for me. All that remained of my life was in that bag. They roughly tossed me across the pack lands border and never looked back. I spent most of my time wandering from place to place, mostly staying in cities largely populated by humans. I never spoke to anyone unless I had to. I did manage to bring my debit card my father gave me for when I traveled on pack business, and I emptied the account at the first place I came to. I've always been smart with money, so that gave me money for at least a few months if I played my cards right. I also had a credit card, but I shredded that the first chance I got. I didn't need to give Marcus a way to track me, and I figured at some point he would shut it off or freeze the account anyways. I didn't starve in the slightest, but I can definitely tell I've lost weight and my muscle definition. Werewolves have great genes and we always look pretty toned even when we're out of shape, but I can tell the difference in the short time I've been gone and not training with the warriors. I missed home. I missed my parents. The events of the night of my birthday haunted my dreams and I woke up at least every other night screaming and in a cold sweat. I also haven't shifted since my birthday, and Aly was growing weaker by the day. She craved a run and freedom, and I'll admit I craved it too. She stopped speaking to me a couple weeks ago and sometimes I hear her whine in the back of my head. I decided while roaming the streets today that I would find somewhere to shift that night and let her have some fun. I left the bed and breakfast I booked for the previous night and headed down the street to a little bakery I found and loved. The owner was warm and inviting and always had my favorite on hand. I passed by many little shops opening up for the day, and I resisted the urge to shop a little. I have no need for meaningless junk and being honest, I don't have anyone else to shop for. I saw an alley way up to my right and the tense feeling in my chest returned like it had on my birthday. I slowed my pace and tied my sweat shirt around my waste, flinging my small purse over my shoulder so it wouldn't be something to grab on to if I were attacked. I was one of the strongest and toughest fighters in my pack, but being the next alpha that was almost expected. The alley was in full view and I crouched a bit to be on the defense in case someone came at me. Stepping forward, I caught a smell that made my stomach turn. Cinnamon and dark chocolate. Aly stirred in my mind and I could hear her low growl faintly in my head. Turning on my heels I checked all of my blind spots and turned back towards the end of the alley, running straight into the hard chest of a man. "You should really watch where you're going." he sneered. "Sorry, excuse m--" "Be more careful next time. Clumsy b*tch." I watched speechless as he stomped away like I had offended him by existing. He was definitely a wolf, and I could tell by his scent that this wasn't my guy. The scent was fading quickly as I tried to locate the direction. I sighed and accepted that the person who was responsible for this whole mess was here, but had left before I got to the alley. Were they watching me? I quickly left the alley and all but ran back to the bed and breakfast. I had been in this city a few days, and I have definitely over stayed my welcome. I packed the few belongings I kept and slung it over my shoulder. Looking around one last time to make sure I didn't miss anything, and checking the travel brochure the front desk gave me, I realized I missed the last bus out of town for the next three hours. I grumbled a little as I realized it would be walking or hitchhiking this time. I quickly checked out of the bed and breakfast, thanking them for their hospitality. I didn't stop to grab anything to eat, a huge mistake on my part, but my brain was racing. I left the bed and breakfast, taking the route that led north out of the city. I kept my eyes forward and didn't meet anyone's eyes. I had my hood up on the only hoodie I owned and pretended to have headphones in so no one would approach me. Making it to the edge of town I spotted a tree line that led into a forest. I tilted my head and knowing my plan, Aly came forward and sniffed the air as well. No one in the area. Perfect. I lowered my bag as I stepped deeper into the trees and took one last sniff of the air to make sure no one was around. My shift would most likely be painful as I had not shifted since my first time. Removing my clothes and packing them neatly in my bag, I took a deep breath and willed Aly to come forward. At first, nothing happened and I looked around confused. 'Just give me a second, little one. It's proving much harder than our first one.' Her voice was weak, but I was overjoyed. My eyes instantly filled with tears hearing her voice in my head. I had missed her and having someone to talk to. It had been lonely without her. I felt my joints twinge and I knew what was coming. Hair sprouted all over my body as my bones cracked into place. It was surprisingly less painful than my first time, but I was sure it was because I didn't have the emotional pain on top of the physical. My paws hit the ground and I let Aly come forward to stretch her legs a bit. She stretched back with her front legs in front of her and her rear in the air and she growled in satisfaction. She rolled on the ground and shook her body to get rid of the dirt and leaves. I sat back as she ran through the trees gaining speed, only stopping when she heard movement in the trees. The squirrels cackling at her as she passed gave her the urge to hunt. I gently reminded her we're alone and need to focus on what we're doing. With a big sigh and a longing look at the squirrel angrily staring at her from the tree, she agreed. She relinquished control somewhat, and sat back happily as I sniffed the air and took off running. I ran for over an hour, and loved every second. I didn't know if there was a heaven, but this felt pretty close.
