I was at the office the next morning when the door opened and he walked in and he held out his hand and smiled .
“Olivia come with me. Now begins your new life.”
I initially didn't move and I was uncertain as I kept my fingers above his.
He had cornered me with money, analyzed my shattered life like a spreadsheet and didn't bat an eyelid when he offered me a contract rather than. consolation.
But there was no other option.
I had to follow the contract and do as he says, this was an opportunity on a platter of gold, the kind of opportunity that I might be Dr ger to see again.
Therefore I put my hand in his.
It was warm in his palm and I was trembling as I got to my feet.
We used a side exit as we left the office building.
A sleek black vehicle was waiting at the curb.
Logan motioned for me to get in as the driver opened the door.
I had never seen him with this car before and my heart was pounding.
I didn't know where we were going and I wanted to ask him but I guess it slipped my mind or I was just too scared or too nervous to ask.
My body was hugged by the leather seat and I felt warm for the first time in weeks.
But I was ice inside and nervous too. I gazed at the city as it passed by through the window.
Through the tinted glass, the streets I used to walk to save money on bus fares now appeared to be strange like I never walked on it before.
But now, I was the wife to the richest man in all of Sicily and for the next one year, I might never taste poverty again or maybe for the rest of my life because I was now rich even after the marriage.
It was a huge sum of money had been deposited into my account.
Logan did not say anything.
He simply typed on his phone looking at me every now and then as if I were a project or worse a burden and then at last br spoke up.
“You’re quiet,” he said at last.
I looked at him and shrugged .
“What should I say? I appreciate that you bought my silence.”
He didn't appear insulted.
“I didn't buy your silence.”
He said.
“You are staring at me as if I wasted your time.”
I said.
He reclined totally relaxed.
“You are too resentful.”
“You're conceited.”
His smile was warm and cute.
“We will have a good relationship.”
I averted my gaze suppressing a reply.
This was not a genuine partnership.
He obviously didn't care for it either and I didn't owe him affection.
My chest tightened though.
Downtown, the car pulled up in front of a tall glass building.
Logan exited as the doorman bowed.
I paused looking up at the tall penthouse.
This was not a world I was prepared for and I wasn't suited for that. Logan stood by the door and adjusted his suit as his eyes pinned me.
“Let’s go. You look as if you want to run away.”
“Should I?” His gaze grew strained.
“You could, if you want, choose.”
He shrugged.
“But Olivia, where would you go?” I hated the fact that he was correct.
I exited and went through a private elevator after him.
He hit the top floor and like a heavy cloud, silence enveloped us.
I entered a new planet as the doors opened.
His glass-and-gold penthouse was sleek, contemporary and far too ideal.
Both clutter and personality were absent.
Just too much room, sharp corners and expensive artwork, things that I hadn't noticed last night.
“Welcome home,” Logan said already untying his necktie.
“Your room is located on the right.
Mine is across.”
“I know.”
I rolled my eyes .
“Are you sure you want me to sleep close to your valuables?” He looked up at me.
“You would have already stolen if that was your intention. Women in need don’t wait.”
That was painful but I didn't say anything, I just turned away and quickly blinked.
I knew that if I said anything then there would be trouble because we would continue arguing till the next morning.
He assigned me a beige soft bedroom that was too serene for my raging thoughts.
I sat on the bed and ran my fingers over the smooth sheets.
My life was not like this.
A fairy tale was borrowed here and there but I had to accept it and get used to it for years because I was Logan's wife now.
Logan knocked on the door later that evening.
I had hardly even unpacked my little bag and I was sitting on my bed and thinking about my life.
“You'll need a new wardrobe.” He said.
“Tomorrow we are having dinner. Paparazzi and the rest, so get ready.”
I got up.
“What kind of dinner is it?” “ Event for shareholders. There will be press. You'll act as though you love me, wear the ring and smile.”
He raised a tiny box of black velvet.
I hesitated before I took it and opened it .
A set of diamond earrings and necklace larger than I had ever seen was inside it was cold glittering and full of lies.
“Try it,” he said softly.
“You would wear it tomorrow and one of the designers would get you your dress.”
I put on the necklace and it was flawless.
As if I had always been waiting for this lie.
Logan looked at my neck for too long and then to my hand as he stared at my hand.
Then he walked off.
“The stylist will be here by morning.”
He said again as if I was deaf.
“Happy night fiance.”
Without saying another word he disappeared.
Gazing at the ring and the necklace I saw false affection, genuine diamonds but I couldn't tell which one frightened me more.
