The disturbance at the party wasn't caused by people, but rather by over a dozen crows, their bodies emitting an aura of fire. Don't be mistaken; they weren't actually ablaze.
They're called Pyrocaws, magical crows with a fire affinity. Some wizards raise them specifically, much like hunters who train falcons. Eventually, these winged companions become their master's trusted helpers.
However, it's quite clear that these Pyrocaws are currently out of control. If taken lightly, the novice students could end up in a lot of trouble.
Mia and Oliver's acquaintance began amidst this chaos. As for the original Freya, when Mia faced danger, she bravely stepped in front of her friend out of loyalty, only to have her back scorched by an agitated Pyrocaw. The injury even left a scar that was difficult to heal.
How did Mia react afterward? Regrettably, aside from a couple of insincere thank-yous, she offered no substantial reciprocation. What's worse, she later seemed to resent Freya's injury, feeling it slowed down the progress of their group's internship.
So this time, Freya decided without hesitation to stand aside and watch.
"Be careful! Don't let those Pyrocaws reach the flower fields! There are incredibly valuable medicinal herbs growing there!" a young boy with glasses urgently called out.
But as soon as his words faded, more Pyrocaws began greedily flying in Freya and Hikari's direction. The flower fields were close by, and the Pyrocaws appeared to be too enticed by the feast before them.
Freya was well aware that unless they actively engaged the ravenous creatures, the Pyrocaws would have no interest in them. It was Mia's previous provocation that left Freya unprepared and ultimately injured.
However, to play it safe, Freya made some preparations before heading out, and it turned out to be the right move.
A few stray Pyrocaws, unable to keep up with the main group, began attacking a small ginkgo tree with their bodies enveloped in scorching flames.
Being familiar with the plot, Freya instantly recognized that this seemingly ordinary little tree was, in fact, a crucial ingredient for the headmaster's wand!
A tall man also noticed the situation and acted even quicker than Freya. He pulled a yellow talisman from his jacket pocket, embellished with elaborate scarlet script. Muttering an incantation, he deftly placed the talisman on the center of the ginkgo tree's trunk.
Almost instantly, the entire tree glowed with a fortunate golden light, remaining unharmed no matter how fiercely the Pyrocaws attacked.
These furious Pyrocaws changed targets, focusing their anger on the man who had intervened.
Freya knew she couldn't stand idly by any longer. While she could ignore Mia's peril, she couldn't turn her back on the innocent bystanders.
As a Pyrocaw prepared to launch a surprise fire attack on the man from behind, Freya swiftly removed her teardrop-shaped brooch and hurled it at the creature like a dart.
Those who were about to step forward to help were amazed as the brooch magically expanded into a net, ensnaring all the aggressive Pyrocaws near the ginkgo tree. Their flames visibly diminished, and soon enough, the once-rampaging creatures regained their senses and docilely remained inside the net.
"Thank goodness I was prepared, so we narrowly avoided danger," Freya said, her relief evident.
Beside her, Hikari's face was filled with awe, her eyes sparkling as she gazed at Freya.
"You're incredible. Before I could even react, you managed to catch them all in one go."
Freya smiled. "This brooch saved the day. Known as Dewlace, it's crafted from the purest mist and spiritually rich morning dew. It's quite effective in countering most fire-based attacks."
Once Freya finished explaining, the remaining Pyrocaws that had invaded the flower field were swiftly dealt with by the teachers, who rushed to the scene, preventing any major damage.
"Hi, my name is Lee Min-Su. I appreciate your help back there," said a tall, good-looking man as he approached to express his gratitude.
As it turned out, it was him—Lee Min-Su, one of Mia's future admirers. He belonged to a prestigious Korean business family and was considered a promising heir. With looks surpassing those of Korean drama leads and a calm, mature air compared to K-pop trainees, he was quite the catch.
Interestingly, he had a small, inconspicuous mole near the corner of his right eye that only added to his appeal. Yet, according to traditional Eastern face reading, this could suggest a rocky future in his love life.
"Don't mention it; I'm Freya, we were both just looking out for that little tree, right?"
Once she found out he was Lee Min-Su, she realized that he would have been more than capable of dealing with those Pyrocaws even without her help.
After all, he was a man who could go toe-to-toe with Oliver. Nonetheless, since he was open to her assistance, Freya thought it wouldn't hurt to be friendly with him.
"Are you all okay? No injuries, right?" A concerned lady in Lake Blue asked.
"We're all good, Ms. Shimokawa," Hikari replied. "Freya and Lee Min-Su handled the situation like pros." She then added, "Since they really saved the day, shouldn't the school give these two brave students some kind of reward?"
"Of course," Ms. Shimokawa agreed, nodding towards the ginkgo tree. "The principal planted that little tree years ago to supply top-quality materials for our students' magic wands. If it had been harmed, it would've been a huge loss."
The kind-hearted woman promised that, in addition to the principal's reward, she would personally give a gift as a token of gratitude.
As it happened, the Pyrocaws causing the commotion were owned by one of her absent-minded students, who had neglected to feed them today, leading to their escape.
It couldn't have worked out better, thought Freya, feeling quite pleased with herself. Not only did she successfully avoid getting burned on her back, but she also reaped an unexpected double reward.
Speaking of which, she wondered how Mia was doing. There probably wouldn't be any kind-hearted fool to serve as her human shield this time.
Her guess turned out to be correct. When Mia appeared before Freya again, there was a burn mark on her right wrist.
It wasn't particularly severe, but it was quite noticeable. The faint scar looked a bit like a bracelet, or perhaps more like a handcuff.
"Are you guys okay? Oh my God, that was so dangerous," Mia said, subtly sizing up Freya with her gaze.
Freya met her eyes confidently. She figured the injured girl must be unhappy to see her unscathed and probably wished she'd suffered more pain.
"Thank goodness, I'm perfectly fine."
Upon hearing the less than pleasing response, a hint of disappointment flashed across Mia's face, which Freya might have missed had she not been paying close attention.
The very next moment, however, Mia put on a normal expression and said with relief, "That's great. I was really worried about you over there."
Feigning astonishment, Freya replied, "Really? My goodness, this is the first time I've heard you say you're worried about me."
Her tone was sarcastic, as if she were performing in an exaggerated stage play. Mia awkwardly laughed and replied, "Of course, we're best sisters, aren't we?"
"Let me think... perhaps so," Freya said ambiguously.
At first, she didn't want to create a scene, but now she found their interactions increasingly amusing, almost like playing with a dog.
"Alright, let's talk later. If we don't hurry, we'll miss the roommate registration deadline," reminded Ms. Kaminawa, who stood nearby.
"Okay."
Once they finished registering, their life on the Tokyo campus would officially begin. Yes, the real drama was about to start.
If it were merely physical pain, that'd be too easy on you, Mia. Just wait and see. I, Freya, will gradually strip away all the pride and glory you hold as the leading lady, every bit of your so-called triumphs.
Freya said this to herself with determination.
