Uncomfortable Encounters and a Question Unasked

842 Words
The "efficient" ice cream date was followed by a hurried, equally "efficient" trip through a department store, where Tai Mu merely pointed at a display of expensive scarves, instructed He Li to "observe," and then swiftly guided her out. He Li felt more like a prop in a meticulously staged play than a person on a date. Yet, the memory of his plain vanilla ice cream and his oddly earnest explanation of "efficiency" continued to amuse her. The next corporate event was a formal evening gala, a lavish affair celebrating GO Foods' quarterly achievements. He Li, once again transformed into "Chen Mei Ling" with a stunning, yet uncomfortable, gown provided by Cheng Xun, found herself navigating a sea of Shanghai's elite. Her role was simple: cling politely to Tai Mu' smile demurely, and blend into the background. Tai Mu, in his element, moved through the crowd with effortless grace, exchanging curt greetings and precise handshakes. He Li, however, was a fish out of water. She felt the weight of curious glances, the subtle shifts in conversation as she approached, and the unspoken questions in everyone's eyes. Suddenly, a familiar voice cut through the polite murmurs. "Tai Mu! And this must be your charming fiancée!" He Li's blood ran cold. It was Ling Hao Ran, impeccably dressed in a custom-tailored suit, his smile as charismatic and unsettling as ever. He moved towards them with a fluid confidence that made Tai Mu's more rigid posture seem almost awkward. Hao Ran's eyes, sharp and intelligent, immediately fixed on He Li, a knowing glint in their depths. "Hao Ran," Tai Mu greeted, his voice cool, a barely perceptible tension in his jaw. The two men stood for a moment, an almost palpable rivalry crackling between them, masked by polite smiles. Hao Ran then turned his full attention to He Li, his smile broadening. "Mei Ling, it's a pleasure to see you again. You look even more radiant tonight. Tai Mu is a very lucky man." His words were smooth, but his eyes held that same mischievous, knowing glint He Li had seen in the lab. He was probing, pushing the boundaries of her deception. He Li forced a demure smile, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Mr. Ling, it's a pleasure to see you too. Thank you for your kind words." She tried to project an air of calm elegance, but inside, she was a nervous wreck. Hao Ran leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a theatrical whisper that only Tai Mu and He Li could hear. "I must say, Mei Ling, you've certainly piqued my interest. Tai Mu never introduces anyone so... unconventional. I'd love to hear more about your fascinating arts management background sometime. Perhaps over a private dinner?" Tai Mu's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. He stepped slightly closer to He Li, a subtle, possessive gesture. "Mei Ling's schedule is quite full, Hao Ran. And she prefers to keep her professional discussions private." His voice was low, laced with a warning. Hao Ran merely chuckled, straightening up. "Of course, Tai Mu. Just a friendly inquiry. No need to be so possessive." His eyes flickered between them, clearly enjoying the discomfort he was causing. "I only worry about my old friend. He has a tendency to be... oblivious to certain details." He gave He Li another knowing look, implying a secret shared not just between the three of them, but perhaps only between him and He Li. The encounter was brief, but it left He Li shaken. Hao Ran clearly suspected the truth, perhaps even knew it. His questions, cloaked in polite interest, were calculated to expose her. The danger felt more real than ever. Later that evening, as Tai Mu escorted her to the car, the silence between them was heavy with unspoken questions. He Li finally broke it, her voice quiet. "Mr. Ling... he seemed to know something." Tai Mu paused before opening the car door, his back to her. "Hao Ran is observant. And competitive. He always has been." He turned, his dark eyes meeting hers. "Do not let him rattle you, Researcher Shen. Your job is to maintain the façade. And mine is to protect our contract." His words were cold, efficient, yet the subtle shift in his tone, the unusual directness in his gaze, held a nuance that He Li couldn't quite decipher. There was no direct comfort, no reassurance, but the fact that he acknowledged the threat, and linked their fates, felt like a strange form of protection. As she settled into the car, He Li looked at Tai Mu, a question hovering on her lips. She wanted to ask if he genuinely trusted her, if he was truly oblivious, or if he too felt the precariousness of their elaborate lie. But the question remained unasked, lost in the silent hum of the luxurious car, leaving He Li to wonder about the depths of Jiang Tai Mu's carefully guarded world. The gala, meant to solidify their image, had only highlighted the increasing vulnerability of her secret.
