CHAPTER 4: A New Horizon

The moment the plane touched the runway, my heart skipped a beat. I looked out the window as rows of palm trees rushed past beneath the bright morning sun. The city stretched into the distance, shining beneath a cloudless blue sky. It was nothing like the place I had left behind. For the first time in a long time, I did not feel afraid. When the doors opened, warm air brushed against my face. I stepped onto the stairs behind my parents and paused for a second. I closed my eyes and took a slow breath. The air smelled different. Fresh. Light. Free. There were no painful memories waiting for me here. No hallways filled with cruel whispers. No rooftop where I had almost lost everything. I gently touched the fading bruise on my cheek. "You stayed behind," I whispered to the girl I used to be. Then I smiled and walked forward. A black luxury car waited for us outside the private terminal. One of the drivers opened the door with a respectful nod. "Welcome home, Mr. and Mrs. Kingsley." Home. The word echoed inside my mind. Could a place I had never seen really become home? The city answered that question little by little as we drove through it. Towering glass buildings reflected the sunlight. Beautiful parks stretched along the roads, filled with colorful flowers and children chasing one another across the grass. People walked with relaxed smiles, stopping at cafés or talking on sidewalks without rushing. I rested my forehead against the window. Everything felt... alive. My mother noticed my expression and smiled. "Beautiful, isn't it?" "It is," I admitted. "It doesn't even feel real." "It will," my father said softly. "Give it time." Almost forty minutes later, the car slowed before enormous black gates. They opened silently. My eyes widened. The driveway curved through rows of flowering trees before stopping in front of a breathtaking mansion. Its glass walls sparkled beneath the sunlight, and white stone pillars surrounded wide balconies covered with climbing roses. Behind the house, I caught a glimpse of a crystal-blue swimming pool. "It is beautiful," I whispered. My father looked at me instead of the house. "I was hoping you would say that." Inside, everything felt warm instead of cold. Sunlight poured through enormous windows. Fresh flowers decorated almost every room. The walls were painted in soft colors that somehow made me feel calm. Nothing reminded me of the mansion we had left behind. That place had always felt too quiet. Too empty. This one felt like it had been waiting for us. My mother gently squeezed my hand. "Come on. I want to show you something." She led me upstairs and stopped in front of a white door. "This room is yours." I slowly turned the handle. The moment I stepped inside, I forgot how to breathe. A large bed stood near the center of the room beneath soft cream-colored curtains. A bookshelf filled one wall. Fresh lilies rested beside the window. Beyond the glass, I could see the garden, the pool, and the hills stretching into the distance. The room felt peaceful. Safe. I walked to the window and smiled. "I have never had a room like this." "You deserve one," my mother said quietly. I turned to look at her. She was crying. Without thinking, I walked over and hugged her. She froze for a second before wrapping her arms around me. "I am sorry," she whispered. "I know." For once, those words felt enough. After she left, I opened my suitcase. As I folded my clothes into the wardrobe, I found my old school blazer at the bottom. My smile disappeared. There was a small tear near one sleeve. I remembered exactly how it got there. Someone had pulled me to the ground while everyone laughed. I stared at it for several seconds. Then I folded it carefully, placed it back inside the suitcase, and closed the lid. I was not ready to throw it away. Not yet. But I was finally ready to stop letting it define me. A gentle knock sounded. "Ariana?" my father called. "Come downstairs. We have something to show you." I smiled to myself. For the first time in years... I was actually looking forward to finding out what came next. I hurried downstairs and found my parents waiting in the living room. A thick navy-blue folder rested on the coffee table. My father smiled as I sat beside him. "This belongs to you." I picked it up and slowly opened it. The first page carried the silver crest of Apex Academy. My fingers lingered over the name. "So... this is my new school." "It is," my father replied. "One of the best in the country." As I turned the pages, I found more than admission papers. There were maps of the city, brochures for cafés, museums, bookstores, parks, and even tickets to an amusement park. I looked at my parents in confusion. "I thought this was supposed to be my school file." My mother laughed. "It is." "Then why are there tickets?" She clapped her hands excitedly. "Because we are stealing you for one whole day." I blinked. "What?" "No school talk. No business meetings. No phones," my father said. "Just the three of us." My mother grinned. "We are making new memories." A small smile crept onto my face. "You two planned all this?" My father nodded. "We missed too many years, Ariana. We cannot get them back, but we can make the years ahead better." His words settled quietly inside me. For the first time, I believed they truly wanted to try. "Okay," I said softly. My mother jumped to her feet. "I knew you would say yes!" She grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the stairs. "Go change before I change my mind." I laughed. "Give me five minutes." I changed into a pair of blue jeans, a white sweatshirt, and my favorite sneakers. When I looked into the mirror, I paused. The bruises were fading. The girl staring back at me looked tired, but she also looked stronger. For months, I had believed every cruel word they threw at me. Ugly. Worthless. Weak. Now, I looked into my own eyes and whispered, "They were wrong." Twenty minutes later, we arrived at the amusement park. Music filled the air. Children ran past us holding colorful balloons. The sweet smell of popcorn and cotton candy drifted through the crowd. "This place is huge," I said. "It is impossible to leave without smiling," my mother replied. "We will test that theory," my father joked. The first ride was a roller coaster. Halfway through, my mother screamed louder than everyone else. My father squeezed the safety bar so tightly that his knuckles turned white. The moment we stopped, I burst into laughter. "You two looked terrified!" "We were protecting you," my father said proudly. "You closed your eyes before we even moved." "I was... praying." My mother laughed so hard she nearly dropped her handbag. The rest of the afternoon passed in a blur of laughter. We played carnival games. My father spent far too much money trying to win me a giant teddy bear. When he finally succeeded, he carried it on his shoulder like a trophy. "I still have excellent aim," he announced. "You missed twelve times," my mother teased. "Thirteen," I corrected. He sighed dramatically. "I liked both of you better when you were quiet." We laughed all the way to the car. As the sun began to set, the sky turned shades of orange and pink. I hugged the teddy bear against my chest and watched the city lights slowly appear. For the first time in years, my heart felt lighter. That night, after dinner, I looked at my parents. "I want to start school tomorrow." They exchanged surprised glances. "So soon?" my mother asked. "You can wait another week," my father added gently. I shook my head. "If I keep waiting, I will only become afraid again." My father smiled. "I am proud of you." My mother walked over and kissed my forehead. "Remember who you are." "I will." She smiled. "You are stronger than your past." Those words stayed with me as I climbed the stairs. Inside my room, I placed the giant teddy bear beside my bed and opened the curtains. The city sparkled beneath the night sky. Tomorrow, I would walk into Apex Academy. A new school. A new country. A new life. I did not know what waited for me beyond those gates. But this time... I was ready to face it.
