CHAPTER 3: SHADOWS BETWEEN HEARTS

1226 Words
Drey walked Isla home under the soft drizzle, the city quiet except for the distant hum of traffic. Her hand was tucked into his, their fingers intertwined, and he couldn’t stop staring at the way her hair clung to her cheeks, damp from the rain. Every time she laughed at something he said a soft, airy sound that warmed his chest he felt as though he could breathe for the first time in years. “You’re staring again,” Isla whispered, a teasing lilt in her voice. “Do I need to remind you it’s… impolite?” Drey chuckled, squeezing her hand gently. “I can’t help it. You… ” His words caught in his throat. How could he explain the years of waiting, the nights of imagining this very moment? He shook his head, laughing softly instead. “You’re just you. That’s all I can say.” She smiled, a small curve that lit up her damp, tired face. “I’m glad you still remember how to talk to me,” she teased. “I was starting to worry I’d come back and you’d forgotten everything.” Shuga walked a few steps behind them, her jacket slung over her shoulder, her lips pressed into a tight line. She couldn’t help it. Every stolen glance between Drey and Isla every shared smile, every brush of hand twisted something inside her. Not anger. Not exactly. But something closer to ache, a quiet, gnawing jealousy she could never voice. “Careful there, Drey,” she muttered under her breath, trying to sound casual as she watched them. “You’re going to melt her completely before we even get to her apartment.” Drey glanced back at her with a grin. “Shuga… lighten up. We’re fine.” Shuga rolled her eyes, muttering something about “completely impossible,” but she followed along, every step a careful balancing act between observation and restraint. When they reached Isla’s apartment, she turned to him, eyes searching. “I don’t want this night to end,” she admitted softly. Her hand lingered in his, as if releasing it would unravel something fragile inside her. “You don’t have to let it end,” Drey whispered. “Not if you don’t want to.” He brushed a stray damp strand of hair from her forehead, letting his fingers linger for a heartbeat longer than necessary. She shivered partly from the chill, partly from the electricity of his touch. “Drey…” she breathed, and in that moment, everything else fell away the storm, the uncertainty, the seven years of absence. All that mattered was the warmth of his hands, the steady pulse beneath his palm, the promise in his eyes. Shuga, standing a step behind, clenched her fists. Her throat was tight. She wanted to intervene, to remind Drey that something wasn’t right, that danger might still be waiting but she couldn’t. Not now. Not while watching him look at Isla like that. “Careful,” Shuga murmured to herself, stepping back as a shadow detached itself from the corner of the street. A figure approached slowly, a hood pulled over their head, their steps deliberate. Drey noticed first. “Do you see that?” he whispered, tension threading through his voice. Isla’s head tilted slightly. “See what?” Shuga narrowed her eyes. “That person. They’ve been following us.” The figure finally reached the lamplight. Pulling back the hood revealed Rowan tall, calm, with an unreadable expression. His gaze swept over Isla, then Drey, lingering just long enough to feel unsettling. There was something… calculated about him, a quiet awareness that made Drey’s chest tighten. “Evening,” Rowan said smoothly, his voice low and controlled. “Sorry to intrude, but I think we need to talk.” Drey stepped protectively in front of Isla. “Who are you?” His voice was steady, but his knuckles whitened around Isla’s hand. Rowan gave a small, knowing smile. “Someone who knows things you don’t. Things about… her disappearance. And why she came back.” Isla’s eyes widened. “You… you know about that?” Her voice trembled slightly. “Then… you can tell me?” Rowan’s gaze flicked to Drey. “I can tell her, yes. But not here. Not now.” His calm demeanor unnerved Drey even more. There was a dangerous air about him, something that didn’t belong to ordinary people. Shuga’s jaw tightened. “I don’t like this,” she said flatly, moving closer to Drey. “Who is this guy?” Rowan looked at her briefly, his lips curling into a half-smile. “You’re Shuga?” Shuga froze. “Yes… how do you—” Rowan’s eyes returned to Drey and Isla. “Let’s just say I’ve been watching. And I know you two have… questions. About her. About what happened. And if we don’t start talking soon, you might not get the chance.” Drey’s stomach churned. He instinctively pulled Isla slightly closer, as if his presence could shield her from Rowan’s enigmatic intensity. Isla’s fingers twined with his, gripping him like an anchor. Shuga’s eyes narrowed, suspicion and frustration flaring. “Watching? Why would anyone be watching her? Or you?” Rowan didn’t answer instead, he glanced briefly at Isla and something unreadable flickered across his face a mix of awe, calculation, and something darker. Then he said, “I think you’re about to find out. But it’s not safe here.” Drey felt a protective surge. “No. We’re not going anywhere with you not until I know who you are, and why you’re here.” Isla, sensing the tension, squeezed Drey’s hand. “Drey… maybe we should listen,” she said softly, voice barely above a whisper. “If he knows… maybe he can help us.” Shuga’s eyes snapped to Isla. “Are you insane? This guy just appears out of nowhere and wants to lead you somewhere?!” Isla looked at Shuga, then back at Drey. “I don’t know… I just… I trust Drey. And… I trust you a little.” Her words were laced with vulnerability, and even Shuga had to pause. Drey exhaled slowly. “Alright. But we go together. All three of us. No secrets. No games.” Rowan’s smile widened just enough to be unsettling. “Fair enough. But… don’t take too long. Time is… slippery. And not everything that’s waiting can be reasoned with.” As they walked into the night, Drey’s heart ached with conflicting emotions: the joy of holding Isla close, the heat of their shared laughter and whispered words, and the tension of Shuga’s presence, her unease and barely concealed jealousy. Rowan’s shadow fell over them, calm, precise, and unnerving. The storm outside seemed to echo the storm inside them: love, fear, and uncertainty swirling together in an inescapable torrent. Drey squeezed Isla’s hand. “Whatever happens… I won’t let anything take you from me again.” Isla looked up at him, a small smile breaking through her fear. “I know,” she whispered. “I know.” And for a moment, the three of them Drey, Isla, Shuga stood together, hearts beating fast, caught between the warmth of love, the sting of jealousy, and the pull of something dark that was waiting just beyond the edge of the storm.
