CHAPTER I

2159 Words
ONE YEAR LATER I would die for a chance to take a bite out of a burger—with extra cheese, of course. I drag a long, sharp claw towards my finger for the nth time, pressing it gently to withdraw some of the sticky crimson liquid from the inside as an alternative for ink. I was sitting on the ground when I managed to make a perfect square—each side represents another day that I have been locked up ever since the Enigma captured me, and based on my calculations, I have been stuck in this place way longer than I like. I have been here for a year now. Every fiber of my being screams out in pure agony every time I attempt to move. Silver is considered a weakness for our species—it is one of the keys to harming our race. No werewolf can survive it if it penetrates the inside of their system—that is why it became a perfect weapon for battles. Well, except for the Lycans—lucky motherfuckers. Ever since I was a kid, I have always been fascinated with Lycans. They are like us yet they are considered superior to our race—that is what pisses me off. What makes them special other than being immune to silver? Well, there are a few reasons I have in mind. They have been granted the power of the moon crystal, which the goddess created herself. They are the ultimate protectors of our kind, her army—which is why the goddess made them immune to silver, our weakness. Although, it is absolutely mesmerizing to think of. All I could think about is how unfair it was. I mean, like, why am I not a Lycan? Anyways, Rogues are way cooler though. Diverting my attention to something else, I eyed the two beefcakes standing in front of my prison cell. Under different circumstances, I could have taken the lives of those two with a snap of my fingers. But for now, it is entirely impossible. Believe me, I tried to escape so many times before, but it was useless. I blame it all on the silver. Who even likes silver? And who the f*ck discovered silver? The first few months of me being imprisoned were pure agony—but then, as time passed, I became used to it. I became immune; I can tolerate the pain they cause me every single time. Duncan—the leader of The Enigma, and someone who so adores me—won't let a day end without a series of torture with yours truly. Which I look forward to every time. He called it pleasure time—the f*cker enjoys seeing me grimace in pain from the effects of his sadistic behaviors. Worst of all, he did not waste any seconds from the moment we arrived in his territory to unleash his demons and begin his torment. I remember it very well. “Not too harsh, a**h*le,” I said through gritted teeth. I glared at the men who shoved me into a silver chair and struggled to put the silver chains around me, preventing my escape. They clearly thought this through. I bit on my tongue to prevent the scream that was about to come out when the mineral touched my skin. I forced a sweet smile to not give them the satisfaction of seeing me in pain. “Silly little—.” Duncan started to say. But I cut him off by shushing him. Jesus, no, just stop,” I said, “I already understand.” He looks confused and says, "Well.” “Seriously, spare me the time; I don’t feel like hearing this,” I cut him off nonchalantly while looking at his reddening face. It's quite hilarious, if you ask me. “You're going to...” He tried again. I feign a yawn and say, “Really? You actually don’t have to explain and bring up a master plan with an inexplicable detail of how you’re going to make my life a living hell from now on, blah...I get it.” He was getting mad. “I will f*cking kill you.” “Oh Lord God, now you’re going to say that you want to avenge her and have your revenge by killing me. I know this! You’re not as mysterious as you think, lover boy. Loo-.” The f*cker slapped me hard. My left cheek bangs against the chair, and I can taste blood on my tongue from having to bite on it so hard to prevent sounds from coming out. I quite expected it considering his anger issues, and for being a mouthful in this situation—I can’t help it. “If you want to have some of my mercy, better shut your f*cking mouth!” he sneered, his voice going dangerously low. I chuckled and spit blood on his face, “That’s all you’ve got?” Again, I can’t help it. He slapped me one more with the back of his hand, a lot harder than before—making my neck almost snap. I grinned tauntingly at him, fully aware of the dripping blood from my mouth. He grabbed my cheeks with his left hand, and his right was currently grasping my tangled hair. His claws pierced my cheeks as he squeezed them roughly—don’t get the wrong idea. “I’m not going to stop until that smile disappears from your face, until you become empty, until you beg for mercy, until you f*cking die!” said Duncan—but his threat doesn’t concern me at all. It was his spit that showered my goddamn face. My beat-up face scrunched up in disgust, “Goddamit, ew.” Thankfully, he ignored that comment. He gestured with his finger, “Bring it in.” He stares at me evilly. Moments later, I saw the entrance of a man wearing a lab coat. He is wheeling a stainless steel trolley. Duncan outstretched his hand and said, “Give it to me.” The doctor did not hesitate to grant him his wishes. The man withdrew a series of bottles from the container and a single syringe. He looked tormented—almost guilty—but he knew that the pin was on him the second he went against this. That made me gulp in fear. “What’s that, Duncan?” I said, almost trembling. “You're not so confident now, I see.” He grinned. “You’re about to find out, sweetheart.” I went to open my mouth, but his finger roughly silenced me. “Don’t waste your energy, darling.” He whispered, “Better lose some hope; no one will ever come to rescue you for what you have done after all. Especially your father; he will never forgive his reckless daughter for letting his favorite son die.” My throat dried up; I remember it again. His wide, lifeless eyes staring back at me, the guilt is yet again here. “Now, I will show you pain,” he smirked, chuckling while injecting the liquid inside of me. All I felt was pure agony after that. I became aware of the liquid that he injected after his first session. Wolfsbane. That poison requires very rare ingredients to brew but is not a secret in our community. Everyone knew that it causes damage to our wolf, decreases strength and abilities, and was also used to immobilize a werewolf. I was injected with it almost every single day. It was clear that Duncan wouldn’t risk anything to give me an opening to escape. “Hey, darling!” one of the guards called mockingly. I look up. He threw a rotten apple inside my cell and said, “Boss wants me to give you that; you better eat it because you won’t get anything else.” I want to kill this guy. An idea suddenly appeared in my mind. The apple landed a few inches away from me, and I forced on the sweetest smile that I could muster and said, “Why don’t you come inside and feed it to me?” He snorted. “Nah, you can handle it.” I pouted, “Come on, aren’t you going to help me? This chain is so heavy.” He hesitated. “Don’t do it, Jasper,” another guard let out a warning growl. The guy named Jasper shrugged his friend off. “She’s completely harmless; calm down.” I forced on a steady smile, watching him open the cell door and reach out for the apple on the floor. He stepped closer to me—wrong move, buddy. But still, it was not enough for me to carry out my plan. “Come on, closer,” I pouted. He took another step and went to his knees to put the apple in my mouth, but it was still not close enough. “Closer... I can barely reach out to get a bite.” He leaned closer after a pause—perfect. “Send my regards to death,” I whispered. His eyes widened, but it was too late. My legs reached out to wrap tightly around his neck. I position my right foot on his right cheek and twist it towards the left instantaneously. Then I heard a snap. I looked up and stared at his friend, giving him a victory grin. He looked at Jasper’s lifeless body while gaping. “What the hell did you just do?!” “Isn’t it obvious, fella?” His face contorted in anger. “You will—" Suddenly, we heard a commotion. At first, I thought it was Duncan and some of his warriors coming down from the dungeons where I was being held. But then I realized that it was something else as the smell reached my nostrils. The guard’s eyes glazed over—someone was mind-linking him. He looks panicked and rushes out of the room, completely forgetting about my open prison cell. Something I once realized about the whole duration that I was held captive here is that no one will ever come to save me. It took a while for me to accept that, since I was in denial at first. I realized that if I want to live long and be saved, I need to do it on my own, without relying on others. I felt betrayed and hurt. Now that I am aware of their situation, I know exactly what I need to do. I won’t let this opportunity go to waste. This is the perfect opening. “Fire!” With all the strength that I could muster, I stood up. I looked at my wrists—clad with silver chains that continued to burn down my skin. Although I should be writhing in pain right now, I have already gotten used to it. I feel numb. I needed to think of something to get these chains off me though, and I had to be quick. Knowing Duncan, he will send someone to check on me even if he is in the middle of a crisis, and with Wolfsbane still on my system, clearly, luck is not on my side. In complete haste, I turned to bang the chains against the wall beside me, exerting a loud noise as a result of the force—but I couldn't care less, I needed to get out quickly. At last, it let out a quiet pop, and before I knew it, the chains fell off of me—freeing me completely. For the first time in a long time, I felt happy. I am now finally free. But my bubble suddenly burst when I heard a loud bang coming from upstairs, and a series of voices followed. With the wolfsbane still in my system, I could not use my ability to shift into my wolf, so I could run away as fast as I could—heck, I couldn't even communicate with her, and the last time was the day I got caught. I tried to use my sense of smell, but it was useless too. So I did what I think was the most rational thing to do. I started to walk and began hunting down where the voices were coming from. Although it may seem idiotic of me to do this and might lose—once again, my newly achieved liberty, I just couldn't help it, I am up for a challenge. Part of me thinks that these people are Duncan and his army, coming to take me and lock me up somewhere far worse. But, I was wrong. Before I knew it, a strong pair of arms had found their way around me, and the smell started to hit me. With an overwhelming sense of shock, I looked up and stared at the eyes that mirrored mine. "Father."
