THIRTEEN THE DARKNESS BENEATH THEM was foreboding. It was almost ironic that when they landed and Daire killed the rotors, they were back where they started. “Beta,” she said, taking off her headset and working her jaw. Helicopters weren’t comfortable. With the noise and the vibration, it was impossible to hold a conversation. She didn’t want to distract the man in charge either. With all the buttons, lights, and switches, helicopters seemed complicated. Silence lingered for a second before Daire took off his headset and got out. She took hers off too and had unfastened her safety belt when her door opened. “Did they wait for us?” she asked, putting a hand on his shoulder, accepting his help to get onto solid ground again. “No,” he said. “They’ll consider tonight a failure. As I do.”
