TWENTY-ONE PAY ENOUGH and you can get just about anything. That was Daire’s explanation while choosing a helicopter emblazoned with a specific company’s name. He needed it and that meant bribing a guy. Unfortunately, there wasn’t time to ask more about the why. Once they were in the air, casual chitchat seemed inappropriate. Land gave way to sea. She couldn’t see anything beyond and had to wonder where they were going. What was the range of a helicopter? Surely not as much as a plane. Being out over the vast water was unnerving. Just as her anxiety edged toward fever pitch, she saw it, an island. Out there, surrounded by the blue, grey waters. Was that it? Their destination? Yes. They landed in a clearing near the shore.
