TWENTY-EIGHT “THIS IS WHERE YOU MET?” Styx asked, taking in the Buckhorn office as they entered. As adults. “In this very room,” she said, hurrying over to press the button for attention. She held her breath. It was crazy but some part of her expected Danny to walk through the door behind the counter. He wouldn’t, of course he wouldn’t. Daire hadn’t left her safe on Falcon’s island just to come work shifts at a junkyard. When the door opened, her smidgen of hope was dashed. Tall, blond, she recognized this guy, but didn’t know him. The patch on his chest read ‘Jesse.’ Once upon a time, she’d have taken that as gospel. Now, with what she’d been through, whether it was true was anyone’s guess. “What do you need?” Jesse asked, then noticed Styx and became wary. “He gonna cause trouble?”
