Chapter 7: Trapped in the Dark

615 Words
The rain kept falling harder and harder, turning the mountain slopes into rushing streams of mud and water. Some miners had already scrambled out to safety, clutching their tools tight against their chests; others huddled beneath rough makeshift shelters down below the ridge, shivering and soaked through. But one soul was missing—Kaelen Vareth. Down deep inside the mine, the sudden flood of water had rushed in fast, dousing his small torch completely. Fire died in an instant, and utter, heavy darkness swallowed him whole. He was alone now, trapped far beneath the earth, with nothing but blackness pressing in from every side. Up on the surface, Marco Agusto ran wildly through the crowd, shouting Kaelen’s name until his voice grew hoarse and cracked. He asked every person he saw, searched every corner, every shelter, every group huddled together—yet no one had seen him come out. Kaelen was more than just a friend; he was the brother Marco never had, the only family he had left in this hard world. Tears spilled freely down Marco’s rain‑soaked cheeks, mixing with the water dripping from his hair and clothes. He begged the others to help him go back in, pleaded to be allowed to search—only to be held back firmly by strong hands. “You cannot go down there!” cried Torin Brigg, his voice heavy with dread. “The tunnels are filling fast, walls are shifting, the whole mountain is weakening—anyone who goes in may never come out again. It is far too dangerous!” Gareth Hild, the foreman, stood grim and sorrowful beside him, nodding slowly. “I know what he means to you… but we cannot risk more lives. Not now.” Wet, shivering, and helpless, Marco sank slowly to his knees right before the dark, gaping mouth of the mine. He wept openly, his heart torn apart by fear and grief. He had already lost his whole family once; he had walked through that terrible emptiness alone. Now the thought of losing Kaelen too—the one person who had made his hard life feel lighter, who had stood beside him through everything—was a pain too heavy, too sharp, to ever bear again. Far below, in the cold, rising dark, water crept slowly higher around Kaelen’s ankles, then his calves, inching upward minute by minute. Thick, suffocating blackness wrapped around him, and hope began to fade like smoke drifting away. Yet even as fear trembled through his small frame, his mind filled only with the faces of those he loved most: his mother Elara, frail and sickly, waiting for him back in their little hut; his sweet little sister Liora, always running to hug him, always looking up to him with trusting eyes. He thought of every meal shared, every gentle word spoken, every quiet moment spent together. Then came Marco—his loyal companion, the one who had saved his life once already, who walked beside him every dawn, who treated him like kin. He clung tight to those memories, to those precious faces, holding them close in his heart as if they were the only light left in the world. I have to go back… I have to get home… they are waiting for me… Outside, the storm raged fiercer still. Heavy sheets of rain hammered down endlessly, while blinding flashes of lightning split the sky and deep, rolling thunder shook the very ground itself. Men and women stood huddled together, helpless and silent, watching the wild weather tear at the mountain—powerless to stop it, powerless to reach the boy trapped somewhere deep beneath the rock and mud.
