Perched on the broken walls of the ancient fortress, they watched us with beady eyes as we took in the dramatic scene – jagged ruins rising from a rocky promontory, waves crashing against the cliffs below. The soft morning light covered everything in gentle blues and pinks, and a mist floated above the North Sea. In an hour, tourists would flood these grounds, but right now, the world felt like a secret shared between me and the stones.
