CHAPTER 23THE WALK Salt spray stung my face as we walked. The North Sea looked like hammered metal under a sky that kept changing. Sunshine warmed my cheeks one moment, then a cloud's shadow chilled them again. "Crickey, this beats staring at murder boards!" Brian shouted, his words carried off by the wind. He spread his arms wide and almost tripped on the uneven path. I squinted at the winding coastal trail ahead, which followed cliffs dropping down to where white-capped waves crashed against black rocks. We passed the ruins of Slains Castle, then the collapsed sea cave at Bullers of Buchan. All around us, nature showed off: rock layers pressed into ripples, arches shaped by thousands of years of tides, and lone stacks standing against the sea. Seabirds circled and cried above. A part
