12 KURT Thankfully, Ryan warned me about the sudden disappearance of personal connections between wherever we were and home, so I didn't completely freak out when Ben disappeared from my mind. I tried to sit with Ryan for a while after Ben had gone, but the ornately lettered words of the antique books he was studying swam before my eyes, and I ended up finding my way back to my room and falling asleep. I woke only when Meredith brought me another bowl of soup for dinner, and then only long enough to finish it. By the time I woke the next morning, I had slept over sixteen hours and felt like a new man. I eagerly eyed the tray of food Meredith carried, and tried not to show my disappointment when she set it down in front of me. It was solid food this time. Vegetables. Cheese. Eggs. Bread.
