The next morning, Mrs. Clara Benson stood outside Emily's house, holding a worn cardboard box tightly against her chest.
Emily opened the door, surprised to see her former teacher so early.
"Mrs. Benson? Is everything alright?"
"I think," Mrs. Benson said softly, "you should see what's inside this box."
Curious, Emily invited her in. Aunty Rose, who had come to visit, joined them in the sitting room.
Mrs. Benson carefully placed the box on the table and removed the lid.
Emily froze.
Inside were dozens of envelopes, each carefully addressed to her.
The handwriting was one she would recognize anywhere.
"Liam..." she whispered.
With trembling hands, she picked up the first letter and slowly unfolded it.
"Dear Emily,
It's only been a week since I left, but Greenwood already feels like home because you were there. I hope you're smiling. I promised I'd return, and I still intend to keep that promise."
Tears rolled down Emily's cheeks.
She reached for another letter.
"Today was difficult. Mum has been working late, and I miss our conversations under the old oak tree. I hope your history project earned the highest grade. I know it would have made you laugh to see me trying to cook dinner. It didn't go well."
Emily smiled through her tears.
"He remembered everything," she whispered.
Mrs. Benson sighed sadly.
"I'm so sorry, Emily. These letters were never delivered. They were accidentally stored away with old school records. I only found them yesterday."
Emily looked into the box again.
There were letters for birthdays.
Letters for Christmas.
Letters filled with hope.
Letters written when Liam was lonely.
Letters written when he almost gave up.
But not once had he stopped writing.
Aunty Rose gently wrapped an arm around Emily.
"You see? He never forgot you."
Emily nodded, unable to speak.
Just then, Daniel arrived to return a book he had borrowed. He stopped in the doorway, confused by the emotional scene.
"What happened?"
Emily handed him one of the letters.
After reading it, Daniel looked at her with a smile.
"I told you he wasn't the type to disappear without a reason."
Emily wiped away her tears.
"I wasted years believing he had moved on."
"No," Daniel replied. "You both lost time... not love."
That evening, Emily read every single letter.
The final one had been written only a few months earlier.
"If these letters ever reach you, I want you to know that I never broke my promise. I've searched for you in every way I know. If hope still lives in your heart, I'll keep searching until I find you."
Emily closed the letter and held it close.
"He never gave up," she whispered.
"No," Aunty Rose said with a smile. "Now it's your turn."
Emily stood up, her eyes shining with determination.
"I'm going to find him."
At that very moment, hundreds of kilometers away in Riverdale, Liam packed a small travel bag.
Helen looked at him.
"Are you sure about this?"
He nodded.
"I've waited long enough."
"Where will you start?"
Liam smiled faintly.
"Greenwood."
Neither of them knew it yet, but after years of searching, fate was finally bringing them back to the place where their story had begun.
