Nanette’s voice calcified a little more each day. “I’ve already tucked her in.”
Danny always felt small when he talked to his ex-wife. It was the same bullshit every time he called. His power was gone. If he wanted a relationship with his daughter, he had to go through Nanette, and if Nanette insisted on playing games, what could he do but let her? He had no choice.
“Come on, Nan.” He hated the way his voice sounded, so high-pitched and pleading. “I took more kiddie books out from the library. Just let me read her a story.”
“I already read her a story, Daniel.” His named felt spiky on Nanette’s tongue. “Better luck tomorrow.”
That just about put him over the edge, but he held it together for Laura’s sake. “Just let me say goodnight to my daughter.”
