My heart pounded painfully in my chest. “I’m here for my mom,” I said to the nurse at the front desk “I got a call that something had happened to her. What’s wrong? The nurse at the desk glanced at her screen, then at me with an expression that made my stomach drop. “I’m sorry,” she said hesitantly. “Sorry for what?” My voice rose, and I felt the burn of panic clawing up my throat. “Where is my mother?” The nurse looked around nervously, then leaned in closer. “She’s still in the emergency room.
